Our Novara Stinger 16 in. kids' bike has a slightly bigger frame and wheels than its 12 in. sibling, offering all the fun a developing rider could want from their first bike.

Sturdy high-tensile steel frame is almost as tough as they are and is designed to stand up to demanding use
Rear coaster brake is easy and intuitive to use; simply backpedaling engages the brake
Removable training wheels and built-in full-length chainguard help kids learn to ride without fear of tipping over or catching pants in the chain
BMX-style handlebar is comfortable and fun; pads enhance safety and the front mud guard helps keep things clean
Convenient handle is integrated into the back of the saddle for easy carrying or control

After its initial break-in period you might notice your bicycle performing less responsively than the day you brought it home. Not to worry, this is typical of all new bicycles and simply reflects that cables have stretched or their housings have seated themselves into final position. To keep running at peak performance, all REI bicycles come with a FREE warranty tune-up, which should be accomplished between the first 100-200 miles of riding or after the first two months if you're accumulating miles less quickly. A great kids' bicycle in most every way, and two '09s have served the family well over the last three years with two caveats:

On both bikes, the fenders need re-fastening a couple times per year. No biggie.

On both bikes, the plastic chain guard broke and fell off. Not a big deal in and of itself, but there are no replacement chain guards. I tried calling and tried visiting my store with the bike in hand.

The latter is Bad for the kids' pants, and ultimately for the resale value of the bike.

My five year old has been tearing up the neighborhood with this bike. He rides all the time and is having an easy time riding it and having a great time. The training wheels are sturdy and strong. Bike is well built.

I bought this bike for my now 5 yr old son 2 years ago. He hated the training wheels, as most kids do. But after removing them, he has riden this bike on anything from the MS Ride (road) to farm trails (singletrack). He has been asking me to help him with ramps and I feel that this bike can handle them.
The only problem that we've had is that the back wheel worked loose on a ride. Most likely my fault for lack of maintance.
