Comments about Yakima FarOut Pro Roof Bag:

I have used this carrier on two three day Maryland-New Mexico trips--it rained on both trips and everything in the bag that wasn't in separate bags was soaked (golf bags, hiking boots, day pack, etc.) and there was water in the bottom of the bag when I emptied it. Yakima says the bag is "water resistant"--I don't think so. It appears that rain gets blown under the zipper cover, so a deeper cover and more substantial velcro closures might solve this problem. Also, the bag is a tight fit on my Subaru Forester--the bag sits so close to the cross rails that it is difficult to get enough slack to tighten the attachment straps. On a larger vehicle it would probably be fine.

Overall, the bag seems well made and has great capacity, but I would only recommend it for use in dry weather.

Comments about Yakima FarOut Pro Roof Bag:

Pretty good roof rack, material is heavy duty compared with others (e.g., Thule Caravan). Appears to be fairly weatherproof, although I did not drive in the rain. The main selling point is that this is just about the only roof top carrier that does not require mounting to a roof rack. Straps attach to large hooks hanging from the bag, and are secured inside the car. This is a pretty good setup, but loosening the straps takes a bit of practice...basically you have to flip the black plastic fastener backwards so that you can loosen the straps. This system really works well. I took this camping, and, using the bag unexpanded (i.e., 9 cu. ft.), I was able to fit a 6 person tent, 4 sleeping bags, 4 pillows, and 4 self-inflating sleeping mats. It's aerodynamic, but I discovered that it's crucial that the straps lay as flat as possible on the roof. This is easier to achieve when you tighten an empty bag to the roof, then load afterwards. I estimate that the having this roof rack on my Honda Accord lowered my gas mileage 3-4 mpg on the highway; to me, that's very acceptable. There are convenient carrying handles on the bag. You might think these handles could be used for carrying the full bag, BUT DO NOT CARRY A FULLY LOADED BAG USING THE HANDLES. I did this and the seam started to rip in the front where the front carrying handle is. Another downside to this bag is that the vinyl-like material on the bag can melt in the hot sun (I was in the Nevada desert); but this only happened in the few places where two pieces of vinyl were touching. When melted together, you can pull the material apart again, but the vinyl can sometimes come apart from the backing, which I would think would compromise the waterproof characterisitics of the bag. It would also be nice to have more solid zipper pulls that you could attach a lock to; it is impossible on this bag b/c the zipper pulls can detach from the zipper. As it is, there is no way to lock the bag, so I had to keep an eye on it whenever we stopped.
