        I wanted to love this backpack. It seems well made and the unique suspension system intrigues me. I purchased it with mountaineering in mind. The trouble I had with it was the lack of adjustability. I am somewhat tall and slender (6' tall, 30" waist), and the torso length of these packs cannot be altered. The waist belt of the Medium fit well, but the torso was too short. Bumping up to a Large improved the torso fit, but then the waist belt was too big to cinch down and ride my hips properly. Had to return it.
        I like the streamlined simpleness of the backpack. The ice tools pocket might be a good thing for technical climbers - I would have preferred a couple of simple ice axe loops.

        Comments about Black Diamond Epic 45 Pack:

        Did an overnight snow route in Colorado with this pack. Very comfortable and effective. The swivel hip-belt is a very nice touch. The overall design of the pack distributes a decently heavy load nicely. You can pack this thing to the gills and not have to worry about over-doing it. Durable and user friendly, yet simple without too many bells and whistles. Really liked the ax holders. Would have given this pack 5 stars, but the zipper on the top of the lid would not zip closed - faulty zipper design. Going back to try and find one of these packs without this defect. I highly recommend this pack for alpine/snow climbs and general mountaineering, BUT do NOT order online. Go to the store and make sure that all of the zippers work properly.
