I love this pack. It's perfect for short hikes, theme parks, or other occasions where you need a small pack for personal items and water. It has a comfortable fit, it's light weight, has awesome storage pockets, and the silver reflective color keeps it from heating my water in the desert.

Was disappointed to find the drink tube did not feed out onto the shoulder strap but comes out through a central hole at the back. Also, prefer the old design where the bladder hangs in it's compartment on a loop where this pack has a fabric band that the bladder cap fixture hooks over the band. It's awkward because you can't see because the cap fixture is facing away from you and the fit is pretty tight. Was much easier to hook the bladder in, shake the pack a few times to seat the bladder and zip it up.

I use this when I plan to out longer than a hour or so. I fill the bag full of water for weight and feel it sits well on my back. Plenty of room for snacks, tubes, and whatever else. Lifetime warranty+REI=No Brainer. If you have a need buy with confidence.

I have used the pack for day hikes and daily travel outings. It is perfect for both of these uses. The bladder holds enough water to get you through a long day in hot weather. I just took it to a 4 day music festival where it was 85+ everday and I was walking around for 8-12 hours and the pack was great. The pack fits comfortably even when its full of gear. I am always impressed by how much I can fit in the bag. Like I said its perfect for daily outings.

I got this pack as a gift (not a compensated gift/review), and I LOVE it. I realize it's officially a biking pack, but I wanted something for day hikes and this was the pack with the best size/bulk/fit in my opinion.
It comfortably held thin/packable rain pants, rain/wind jacket, energy bars, a sandwich, flashlight, a few first aid items, wallet, phone, and a Nikon P7000 (larger than just a pocket camera). That's in addition to a full reservoir.
The only time it might get "bulky" in there is on a day when I need to also carry a fleece or warmer top, but then the stretch part that's meant for a helmet could easily accomodate the rain shell instead, and fit a thin athletic-fabric sweater in the pack. It would not hold a heavy fleece sweater or anything.
I am somewhat comfort driven - I want all my important gear with me - but I checked "minimalist" in this review, and that's on purpose. This pack forces me to bring what I need and leave extra bulk, weight, etc at home. That made me a happier hiker after 6 hours when I wasn't bogged down with extra weight.
I could also have carried the camera separately in its own bag, and kept my phone and wallet in my pockets - adding more room to the bag.
Only two things bug me:
1) I can't figure out if the hose clip on the shoulder strap can be moved from right to left. It looks like it should clip on/off but I'm afraid it might not work. I would like to have a left handed option.
2) the "media" pocket is a loose flap and "flips" out each time I get something from the interior of the pack. It feels like an afterthought. I'll likely never use it, so it's just in the way a bit - not enough to be a big deal, but I'm surprised by this given Camelbak's otherwise meticulous attention to detail.

I hike several times a week and absolutely LOVE this backpack. The reservoir valve did start leaking and I called Camelbak directly - they sent me a new reservoir right away (their products have a lifetime warranty). Highly recommend!

The MULE is the perfect pack for mountain biking whether you're a XC, FR or DH rider. Just fill it up with water and gear based on your particular excursion. I like that its design holds tons of stuff yet remains compact in form. I never feel it shift around while riding and I actually forget that it's there most times. It holds all my tools, spare tubes, gels, keys, phone and there is tons of room left for other stuff. I'll be using it for trail running and hikes as well.
