Can't say enough about this boot. Yes it is on the heavy side but I wouldn't trade it for the comfort and stability. Wore this boot for 2 weeks elk hunting in Colorado and was extremely pleased. I have worn zamberlands for over 15 years and can't say enough about them. This model runs just slightly wider than others.

It took about 200 miles to break it in. I only had a blister once during that time. I took it on a four day rain/snow filled backpacking trip recently and it performed flawlessly. Feet were warm, dry and comfortable. It is a heavy boot and your feet will sweat but you cannot beat the ruggedness. I have about 150 miles of city walking (I walk 5 miles a day to work and back) on these boots and the tread is wearing down. I expected these boot to last many years and at this rate they will not. I am going to stop wearing them on city streets as I know this is the problem. I am very pleased at the performance of these boots. I dislike the laces but I consider that a minor detail when the boot holds up so well in bad conditions.

I've hiked about 200 miles so far in these boots, and I have no complaints. These are my second pair of Zamberlans, and like the other pair, the fit and finish is top notch. I have no idea how many miles I have on my first pair, but they have been through a lot and are still a great pair of boots. They are pricey, but worth it.

After having 3 pairs of the Vasque Wasatch fail the same way (the sole splits open where the ball of your foot flexes) I decided to try the Zanberlan 1006 Vios. After all, a shoe costing that much more had to have superior quality. Right? Wrong! Less than 50 miles and the rubber banding around the foot box failed where it joins to the leather. At two hundred miles it is seperated in 4 places about 5 or 6 inches total. I'm not talking about a little bit of openning at the joint, I'm talking near total separation from the top to the bottom of the band and it is only getting worse. Bottom line, I'm starting to think you can't buy quality so you just as well buy cheap boots and just throw them out as they fail. Having said that, REI IS GREAT TO WORK WITH, their satisfaction guarantee is great.

several short trips with these sofar, some breakin time needed but to be expected. latest trip was a 6 mile snowshoe/slush trip, very wet. Usualy i treat my boots with a water repellent but in this case just right out of the box with no additives and they kept my feet warm and completely dry, even long after the leather outers had become soaked.

Note: I had to give these boots a rating because it is a required field, but the jury is still out, so I gave it a 4-star just to get this review published so I could update you on the width-sizing. I may change my rating up or down after I put some miles on them.

I wanted the Zamberlan 760 Steep which was top rated by Backpacker Mag, but the Steep does not come in wide widths. The manufacturer notes that the 1006 Vioz plus GT RR is built on a wider lathe, but it does not say 'how wide' a foot it fits. I'm a triple-E. None of the REIs in Colorado carry this boot in stock so I took a deep breath, crossed my fingers, and ordered it over the net.
The good news is that it fits me, fits EEE.
As for the rest of the ratings, I'll come back and update this review after I have the boots broken in. They do feel very comfortable, but I've only worn them to the mailbox and back. I do like the high rubber rand around the front and sides and like the way that the Vibram sole runs up in the front and covers/protects the low part of the toe.
