The Osprey Talon 44 pack is well suited for all your summer adventures. It's designed to handle everything from cragging and climbing to overnight backpacking and day hiking.
- Osprey AirScape™ lightweight back panel features ridge-molded foam with channels covered in mesh to allow cooling airflow
- Biostretch™ harness adjusts to fit a range of torso lengths; pattern die-cut EVA enhances comfort and breathability
- Mesh-covered, perforated shoulder straps and hipbelt vent heat and moisture; soft binding on hipbelt and harness adds comfort
- ErgoPull™ hip belt closure is fast and easy to cinch
- Aluminum headrail and fiberglass-composite side struts transfer load weight to the hipbelt and resist sagging
- Top-loading design with a removable lid pocket allows expansive gear storage
- Hydration reservoir compartment is located between the back panel and main compartment, and can be accessed from outside (hydration reservoir sold separately)
- Bottom of pack features sleeping pad straps and a zippered lower compartment for a sleeping bag or clothing
- Front and side stretch-woven pockets are ideal for stashing often-used gear

This is, hands down, my favorite pack for long dayhikes and backpacking trips. I've taken it on a number of strenuous dayhikes up in the North Cascades, and a few 2-3 night backpacking trips (maximum pack weight was 25lbs).
The frame is stiff enough to provide excellent load transfer to the hips while being flexible enough to allow for natural body movement. I believe this is extremely important when hiking long distances.
There are a lot of "bells and whistles" on this pack in the form of straps, clips, etc. At first I was skeptical of all these features, but after using them I have found most of them to be highly useful. For example: The stow-on-the-go pole storage is awesome for when you want to need to stash the poles for a quick scramble; the little pockets on the shoulder straps are very useful for things like chapstick, bug spray, snacks, even a small gps; the hip belt pockets are big enough to be useful; the side compression straps can be routed inside or outside of the side pockets; the hydration bladder pocket is between the framesheet and main compartment (rather than inside the main compartment); etc. I could go on and on. If features aren't for you, you can remove them all pretty easily without harming the structural integrity of the pack. You could probably shed at least 1/2lb by removing the lid and all the extra features. The framesheet and curved aluminum stay are also removable.
If your base weight is in the 10lb range, and you usually carry less than 30lb, I would highly recommend this pack.

I was travelling only with a carry-on, limit of 10kg.
I rarely write a review...but this bag saves my life! Through Vietnam jungle through hiking in Jasper Park, through Egypt... This is the bag.
I found it uncomfortable beyond 10 kg compare to a Gregory (65l). But...fine for what I did with it !

I like this pack so much I bought another one when the first one was stolen. I love Osprey and for the price, I think this is an excellent pack. It's like, comfortable, has a decent amount of organization and is backed by an excellent warranty. I wish they made this model in larger packs, though.

I took this pack with me on a two week trip to Spain, and it worked great. I loved not having to pull around luggage and having my hands free. The pack comfortably fit a pair of jeans, three shirts, a sweater, two pairs of shorts, a dress, a skirt, two pairs of shoes, and a large camera case. I like that you can access your stuff from the bottom, and that there is a seperate pouch on top (I kept a map and guide book there). I am 5'2, and this was the perfect size for me; not too big or bulky. It will be great for overnight camping trips and longer hikes as well. Osprey always delivers quality products.

I normally backpack with my wife and my 4-year old which requires the gregory palisades 80, but I just purchase the talon 44 for day trips and trips with the wife alone. It is Awesome, I can pack everything I normally pack(minus the kids stuff)and food for a couple of days with ease. Now on these trips do I like to eat well, not ultralight if the that helps, but two days weighs in about 40# with 2 liters of water.

Beyond the fact that I love my backpack, choosing one at REI was a wonderful experience! The guy that helped me was so knowledgeable and helpful that I couldn't have been more pleased. He took every precaution to make sure that I had the best pack suited for me.
Traveling with the pack was great. I took it on a plane and it fit easily in the overhead bin. No problems at all.

This pack seems delicate at first, but after putting it through its paces for over 6 months now, it's proven that it's not. This pack has helped me on several overnighters and has plenty of room for the essentials. The size encourages you to pack light, which should be your goal anyway. Also, as a frequent flyer I've found this pack perfect for weekend, even week-long long trips, regardless of what I'm bringing.

I used this pack for a 4 week trip to Europe and wouldn't do it again without it. I used it as a carry-on and it fit in almost all overhead bins even when fully stuffed. The durability was surprising, after the airlines lost it (when I had to check it due to no overhead bin space) I got it back two days later and not a single thing was missing, broken, or torn. It survived Paris, Luxembourg, Germany, and Austria without a single thing wrong with it. Thanks Osprey!
