Use this for multiple daily uses around the house. Have also used in field dressing deer...needed to be sharpened after 2 deer.

Comments about Gerber Epic Knife:
Noticed the product one day while surfing the REI iPhone app. Before buying I noted the reviews, but thought I would give the product a try. The knife is tough, compact and the bottle cap opener will come in real handy. At first I tried to insert the knife into the sheath and thought it was going right back to REI. However, after a couple minutes it fit securely in the sheath once I figured out how much force was required.
Overall, I'm pleased w the purchase, but Gerber needs to take a look at the latching mechanism on the sheath to make it even better. Wish I had this thing when I was deployed to Baghdad.

Comments about Gerber Epic Knife:
I think the knife itself is great. Its got many uses and its also well built. The sheath and the clip by extension is another story.
If the knife isn't put into the sheath right it can get stuck a little. All the other reviewers are right about the clip. It doesn't securely hold the whole thing onto anything.
However, I somewhat made the clip issue tolerable. I wrapped the sheath with hockey grip tape (the sticky kind) under the clip and now it stays secure in my pocket like a champ.
While it would be nice to have a product that was perfect right from the factory, modifying gear never bothers me especially when I already own the materials to do so. And now its always an essential part of most of my outdoor activities.

Comments about Gerber Epic Knife:
The knife itself is pretty good. Came very sharp out of the package. I didn't have any problems with the sheath holding the blade in place. Acutally I think the sheath does a good job securing the knife.
However, note that the sheath clip is not that useful. It's rather thin metal and probably works best clipping into a boot or something else with more bulk. It does not work well as a pocket clip or even around a belt. Worse yet are the screws holding the clip in place. They are TINY and came loose the first day I had the knife out with me. I only managed to find one of them and had to get replacements from Gerber. Am going to have to do some tinkering with the clip and then put some lock-tite on the screws.I did get good service from Gerber when I contacted them. They wrote back right away and I'm getting new screws in the mail. Bottom line is don't count on that clip to hold it in place. Get a lanyard or something else.
That all said I do like the blade. It was designed to be very durable and it certainly feels like it. A rather heavy knife for it's size. The bottle opener on the back in a nice touch.
I do think this one needs a little more tweaking before I'd recommend it to friends. Also, like most things these days: Made in China.

Comments about Gerber Epic Knife:
This is a great knife. I've traditionally carried only folders, but this knife's small, light and functional design have made it indispensable.
I've carried it for months now and it's done everything I've asked it to do.
I've had no problems with the sheath as mentioned in the previous review. It still fits as snugly now as the day I got it and it is not coming out until you need it.

Comments about Gerber Epic Knife:
The knife itself is really very good. Solid, well built, sturdy, good heft, functional blade. It would make a good secondary or back-up knife for camping or backpacking. But the sheath that comes with it is terrible! It's very poorly designed. It holds the knife very loosely, and the knife can pop up with just the slightest wiggle. It takes absolutely zero-pressure to draw the knife from the sheath. This might not be a problem for a longer knife but with a blade this short it literally bounced out of the sheath when I was just walking around my living room. And forget about carrying it inverted (as advertised): Never going to happen. Gerber is a great brand-name with a well earned reputation. It's hard to imagine that they'd release a product with this kind of design flaw. In fact, the design is so bad I'm wondering if I got a defective one. Either way, this little baby is going back.
