Comments about Shimano 105 CS-5700 10-Speed Cassette:
I recently bought this 11-28 cassette to replace my 12-25 in order to get a lower granny gear. This did the trick. I can now spin my way up steep hills much easier.
This cassette takes advantage of the 10 speed drivetrain, giving you a much larger range than a 12-23 or a 12-25. I like to feel a change in speed/effort when I shift. When gears are too tightly spaced, I find myself moving 2 clicks at a time to get to the right cadence.
My style of road riding is mainly supported touring (RAGBRAI & DALMAC). On these rides, with an 11-28, you can easily run a 1x10 for 99% of the ride. I find myself running my middle ring almost all of the time, cruising at an average speed of ~ 17-19 MPH, which puts me in the middle of the cassette and give a good straight chainline. Rarely do I paceline, so I don't spend much time in the 20's unless there's a tailwind.
