The women's MSR Lightning Axis snowshoes use a customizable binding to maximize stride efficiency and comfort on all-day adventures exploring rolling, snowy terrain.

  • Total-Traction™ frame is made from a single, vertical blade of aerospace-grade aluminum, supported by 2 cross-members of high-strength steel
  • Frame supplies 360° of traction, thanks to aggressive teeth integrated into the frame along the outside edges and underfoot
  • Urethane-impregnated nylon decking is lightweight, waterproof and durable; heel strike area features a welded on reinforcement patch
  • Bindings feature a wide, flexible strap that crosses the tops of boots to provide a snug fit; cam buckles adjust easily and lock down with a quick push for fast adjustments
  • Axis™ bindings can be adjusted to compensate for individual toe-in and toe-out tendencies in gait, maximizing stride efficiency and overall comfort with a custom fit
  • Make use of optional instep straps for even greater security; straps stay pliable and easy-to-adjust in cold temperatures, even when wearing mittens
  • Steel crampons underfoot not only grip well, they provide stability and reduce heel drift for an efficient gait
  • Heel lifts ease the strain on your calves during steep ascents
  • All materials are waterproof, so they don't soak up water, freeze and get heavy
  • Recommended load specification for the women's MSR Lightning Axis snowshoes includes weight of hiker with gear; flotation will vary with snow conditions

Comments about MSR Lightning Axis Snowshoes - Women's:

I snatched these up at a recent REI garage sale and the salesperson said they'd had mixed reviews on the new binding system. I can see why; I have an older pair of MSRs and I love how easy the rubber straps adjust, indoor or out. After briefly watching a youtube video, I set the binding system and it does take some patience. But you shouldn't need to adjust once you're outside and the snowshoes are awesome. My old pair are great, but they are wider, so I'm stepping on the sides occassionally. These worked perfect on Vail Pass, and like a reviewer said, work so well you don't have the opportunity to slide downhill. I'd choose MSR over Tubbs or Atlas any day and if you have some patience to set up the binding system, these are a great snowshoe, especially for steeper climbs.

Comments about MSR Lightning Axis Snowshoes - Women's:

I've used these snowshoes maybe 10 times so far. I've used them on packed trails, fresh powder, and off-trail exploration on steep slopes. Setting up the toe strap in the warmth of my house was super easy and setting up the axis turn for my one pigeon toed foot was amusing, but also easy. I haven't had any issues with snapping the straps down, but I haven't used them in anything colder than 17 degrees F. Other reviews indicated the rubber doesn't flex enough to snap the straps down when it's really cold out, but Oregon winters just aren't that cold and I don't anticipate having any problems. These snowshoes are lightweight, very grippy in icy conditions, the heel lift is awesome on the steep climbs, and they're narrow enough that I don't get the hip pain I've experienced when walking awkwardly to keep wider shoes from clanking into each other. Bonus points for getting compliments on these cool looking snowshoes! The worst thing about these snowshoes is that the 360 traction is so good, I don't really get to slide down hills on my heels like I have in other shoes. Bummer.

Comments about MSR Lightning Axis Snowshoes - Women's:

I used my pair twice before returning - the front strap is nearly impossible to adjust properly in the warmth of your own home, and a nightmare when out in the cold.

The traction and stability was great, and if you found a comfortable position for the front strap before heading out, it might not be that bad, but forget about adjustments on the go.

Comments about MSR Lightning Axis Snowshoes - Women's:

I tried these at the REI Demo Days in RMNP. I have Atlas 1223 Electra's that I bought last year that I like, but I might have bought these instead if they were available last year. I have to say they perform well on all types of terrain. I tested them ascending and descending some really steep slopes with no complaints. I still don't like the binding system, but I have to say these are an improvement over MSR's regular set-up. The larger toe strap only needs to be adjusted once for your boots. Even though it looks like you will slip out of them, you don't. Have a rep show you how you put your foot in them initially. Overall, these perform. I just wish MSR had a quicker binding system that was not difficult to manage in really cold temperatures.
