Comments about The North Face Ultra 106 Gore-Tex XCR Trail-Running Shoes - Men's:

I've owned more than 10 pair of these shoes! Before I started wearing them I tried all types of hiking boots but I would always get blisters. Funny, but the blisters always showed up at about the 6 mile marker. Not with these shoes! I've used them for hiking and backpacking and don't get any blisters. I like that you can take them from the box to the trail with no break in time.

The downside is that the sole wears out quickly. From my experience I get about 80 to 100 miles out of a pair before the desert rocks start to hurt and it's time for a trip to REI.

So why do I keep buying them? They work, and when you find something that works you stick with it. As everyone knows, if the feet aren't happy, then nobody's happy :-)

Comments about The North Face Ultra 106 Gore-Tex XCR Trail-Running Shoes - Men's:

I'm on the 3rd iteration of the ultra shoes. This specific model matches the shape and last of the Ultra 104 and Original Ultra/Ultra 102.

These ones fit true to half a size small. Personally I like them a tad bit snug but it might be too snug for some folks and need an extra half size.

I've found these shoes to fit much better than the middle series (Ultra 103/105).

I have used these shoes for around town and hiking with no issues. They feel comfortable and are very supportive for rock scrambling. I have also used them when hiking and photographing near streams to keep my feet dry.

I haven't taken this pair on Travel yet but my earlier pairs were wonderful for travel. A solid, comfortable, dry shoe I could wear all day long without an issues

Comments about The North Face Ultra 106 Gore-Tex XCR Trail-Running Shoes - Men's:

I bought these shoes for trail hiking on Mount Rainier and other hiking in wet areas.

They are a little stiff right out of the box so it took a couple of weeks to break them in. The stock insoles did not provide much cushioning at all so I purchased some hiking specific insoles which was a big improvement.

Sizing runs about a half size small (at least for me). I normally wear a size 10 in ASICS running shoes which fit me perfectly...the Keens are 10 1/2.

I haven't been on a wet hike yet so I don't know how the water resistance will be.

Comments about The North Face Ultra 106 Gore-Tex XCR Trail-Running Shoes - Men's:

I loved this shoe. Tough and sturdy, much lighter than a hiking boot but more solid than a typical trail-runner. I do not recommend this for street running, because they are too stiff, or hot climates, as your feel will sweat more than lighter trail runners. Good grip over slippery river rock crossings. Could even use snow-shoeing if paired w/gaiters. Less flex meant the water proofing hadn't worn out after 100's of miles. It is a wide shoe which I very much appreciate. I wore it without insoles as my feet are short but wide and removing the insoles gave me some more wiggle room. This shoe went through the snow, rivers, deserts, mountains, up, down, flat terrain, and I loved it. Then, the sole blew out and I had a big bump sticking into my foot when I put them on. Bummer. This shoe did a good amount of mileage and could have done much more if the sole hadn't blown out. It got me a lot of places and I still recommend it and hope that what happened to me was a fluke, but I will not be spending the time to break in a new pair.

Comments about The North Face Ultra 106 Gore-Tex XCR Trail-Running Shoes - Men's:

Was debating on purchasing these last May as the previous pair of Hedgehogs by North Face did not preform to my standards. I decided to go with brand loyalty mostly because I didn't trust the Salomon lacing system and wanted to save the $20 difference. I will say I put them through a lot of miles and rough terrain. But I figured an All-Terrain Trail Running Shoe could handle it. The right sole has gone "flat" dropping a full cm on the interior aspect of the heel throwing off the base of the shoe. My chiropractor recommended throwing them out after only owning them 6-7 months. Besides that the interior heel has collapsed so every time I put them on I have to reach my finger inside to pull up the structure of the shoe. Some might point out that having that under my heel might compensate for the compression loss of the sole. I'll be paying a little extra and switching brands.

Comments about The North Face Ultra 106 Gore-Tex XCR Trail-Running Shoes - Men's:

I really le this shoe a would have given it five stars if not for the fact that they took about two weeks to break in. They are slightly heavier than the Merrells that I previously wore but they are well built and waterproof and the weight difference is not enough to turn me off to these shoes. These shoes are excellent for people who pronate which I do. If you don't mind a little extra weight then theses are excellent well designed shoes.

Comments about The North Face Ultra 106 Gore-Tex XCR Trail-Running Shoes - Men's:

I was looking for a shoe that was sturdy enough for moderate trail hiking and could double as a gym shoe. The Ultra 106 delivered on both counts (and it performed well on snow, too). It has great support and cushioning, but I wouldn't consider it lightweight. I haven't had the shoe long enough to comment on its durability. I am very happy with my choice.

Comments about The North Face Ultra 106 Gore-Tex XCR Trail-Running Shoes - Men's:

I purchased this shoe as a middle ground between true road running shoes and full fledged hiking boots. I wanted something durable and multi-faceted as I was going to be traveling often and living minimally for a few years.

I purchased these in May of 2011 and in that time they've seen eight countries, several mountains, miles of road and trail and general everyday use. They take a bit of time to break in as they are a firm supportive shoe, but once they are broken they are quite comfortable and supportive.

My feet get warm very easily and I found that these shoes don't have the best ventilation. I assume that stems from the gore-tex all weather design, but it can get a bit toasty if it's not cold and wet outside. I put them through the wringer in Wales (three days straight of rain, puddles and mud) and I found my feet and socks thoroughly soaked by the end of each day. Although these were extreme conditions, the shoe does a decent job in light rain. I still have a hard time considering them waterproof though.

The tread is well designed, but can get fairly slippery on rocks after they start to wear down. My biggest frustration was when the rubber toe caps started coming loose. If you spend enough time in these shoes the adhesive holding these rubber caps on to the front of the shoe will wear down. I've always had trouble trusting any shoe with designs like this because they simply haven't figured out a way to prevent this from happening. They made it just under a year before it started.

Overall I'm happy with this shoe. I've owned them for a year and six months and I'm about to retire them (probably a bit belated). I definitely put them through their paces and they are still holding up considering the beating I've given them. My suggestions to North Face would be a more durable toe cap system and increased ventilation (within reason in regards to waterproofing).

I Love North Face Products...BUT...there are WAY BETTER shoes out there for alot less $$. They are very stiff which actually made them uncomfortable when bending. I should have returned them but hoped they would break in...they remained horrible. North Face should stay out of the Shoe Buisness...Love their Boots though!
