Comments about MSR Evo 22 Snowshoes:

These are great snowshoes, especially for myself as a beginner. They are affordable, but high quality. I really love them. I actually purchased a pair of Tubbs from REI, but returned them and got these. I love these so much more. The only bad thing is you may need the attachments depending on the snow conditions. I haven't bought them yet and have been fine, but I may need them in the future.

Comments about MSR Evo 22 Snowshoes:

I'm new to snowshoeing and when I had gone to REI to purchase these the REI rep recommended them over the snowshoes meant for steep hills. She saved me about $40. I use these to go hiking up the cascade and olympic mountains in WA state. They work great. The only problem I have with it is that one of the clips that hold the straps broke pretty easily. It's not a big issue seeing as the strap still stayed in place. I would definitely recommend these for any beginners in snowshoeing.

Comments about MSR Evo 22 Snowshoes:

I purchased these snowshoes for ascending, descending, and traversing steep slopes after floundering after my climbing and hiking partners on my Atlas snowshoes for a couple of years. MSR's Evo snowshoes are great performers in these conditions, second to none, especially for steep traversing. They are also wonderful on what passes for snow in western Washington (heavy, wet, crusty). They are even fine on rare days there is actual powder snow. They're more compact than most other snowshoes and have ample traction features to help you stay right side up. They are easy to put on, take off, and adjust. A lot of thought clearly went into their design.

What didn't go into their design is durability. They can and will break in so many different ways. This has happened both to me personally and to multiple friends that own them. The majority of these malfunctions prevent the snowshoe from being functional... so there you are, miles into the deep snow with only one working snowshoe. Some things that have personally happened to mine: the pin that holds the cleat onto the snowshoe has fallen off (multiple times... so much so that I got a bag of spare parts so I could do field repair), multiple rivets that hold the rails onto the plastic deck have popped off, the cloth interface with the metal foot cleat has ripped where it is riveted on, and the side rail failed at the hole where the pin holds the foot cleat in place.

I am fortunate enough to live near Seattle so I can personally take my snowshoes to be repaired at Cascade Designs (MSR's parent company), but at this point I'm having to go after almost every trip. While I'm loathe to go back to my Atlas snowshoes because they don't perform as well, at least I can be fairly certain they'll make it through the trip. Thanks but no thanks, MSR.

I tried a different pair of snow shoes and had problems with the straps icing up making it difficult to take them off. These are great easy on and easy off, great traction too. I suggest getting the tails if you are usinging in deep snow or with heavy pac. They install easy, are light weight and didn't cost too much more.

I rented these from REI for my first shoeing experience and had no issues. I found them easy to get on and off. Traction was great on snow packed trails and deep powder ascents. Hiked about 5 miles and my legs still felt great when I was finished. I didn't get the tails with my rental so I cannot say if they would help or not, but I was close to 200lbs with my pack on and only sunk in when I was goofing around in back country powder.

Comments about MSR Evo 22 Snowshoes:

I first started using these to set trails while working for the Forest Service after trying another brand. What a difference! They changed my attitude about snowshoeing. I worked and play in the Sierras where the conditions are usually wet or icy and on a great day there is powder. When its icy, and the terrain is steep these will get you to places because of the rails. When there is powder or a chance of breaking through the surface, make sure you have the tails with you - I won't go out without them. I used them hard for five years and they still work great and look good. Yes, they are noisy on ice but that is the least of my worries when I am going up slope to take a picture or see what its like just beyond the rise.
