The Madshus Epoch MGV Omni skis will get you out of the groomed area and onto logging roads, backcountry trails and forested glades where you can lay down some fresh tracks.

  • Featuring the grippy MGV Omni positive base pattern, the Epoch skis let you leave unwieldy climbing skins at home while you efficiently tour up slopes
  • MGV Omni positive base pattern features round, spaced scales in transition zones for efficient glide, and sharp, tight scales underfoot for excellent grip
  • Lightweight paulownia wood core with maples stringers creates an agile ski with a smooth, even flex
  • 50mm carbon powerband is laminated above the core to increase longitudinal stiffness without adding cumbersome weight
  • Specially tuned single camber balances the blend between tourability and turnability for efficient travel in backcountry terrain
  • Progressive sidecut varies the shape along different parts of the ski—more aggressive in the tip, less aggressive in the tail
  • The progressive sidecut results in confident, quick initiation in hard snow and easy release in crud and powder
  • 68mm waists and 99mm tips help you stay on top of soft snow
  • Full metal edges help you carve turns on hardpack snow and icy slopes

Comments about Madshus Epoch MGV Omni Cross-Country Skis:

These can't compare to proper XC touring skis on the flats, and you'll be hard-pressed to keep up with people on downhill equipment on the slopes. However, these skis can do both types of terrain with relatively little fuss, better than any other skis I've seen.

I've used these on extended multiday tours as well as backcountry day trips, for which they work well. They can be a bit challenging in tough snow conditions, but they're always adequate. A jack of all trades ski, I think, good for distance touring, but less apt for downhill-specific objectives.

I use them with 3-pin bindings and cables, and I think anything less would be a disservice to the ski.

Comments about Madshus Epoch MGV Omni Cross-Country Skis:

These are basically a re-packaged version of the wonderful third-generation Karhu Tenth Mtns. from about four years ago. I have skied along with people using various Fischers, Atomics, and Rossignols, and nothing clomes even close to these Madshus Epochs for all-around backcountry use. They climb better than any other ski, but also glide better than any other turnable ski. (How do they do that?) At the same time, they turn, i.e. telemark, better than any waxless ski made, except for the Madshus Annum (which is a little slower on the tour). They are the best for ski-backpacking, where you tour up to a campsite one day, then spend the next couple of days telemarking all over the mountain. Highly recommended.

Comments about Madshus Epoch MGV Omni Cross-Country Skis:

These skis occupy a perfect middle ground between true xc-touring skis and fatter downhill skis. I just had them out on the Jackrabbit Trail in the Adirondacks, and they while they wouldn't keep up with a proper xc ski, they have plenty of glide. Also, breaking trail with them is barely noticeable.

I've also taken them to a nearby resort, just to see how they'd do in the steeps. If you are considering these skis, its important to note that they simply won't perform like your downhill skis. However, for moderately steep terrain, these skis will perform well (especially in soft, deep snow). They'll get you down the mountain on more extreme stuff, but you won't be shredding it up.

A word on bindings: I've heard of people mounting these with NNN-BC bindings. That's a mistake I think - there is no sense in buying a ski with this kind of power and turning capability only to mount it with a binding that's really designed with only kick-and-glide in mind. I am using Voilé 3-Pin Cable bindings and they have been great. For boots, I'm in an old pair of T3s, which have also been great. However, depending on your preferences, you could probably get away with a softer boot.

All in all, a great ski!
