This Personal Locator Beacon should only be used in situations of grave and imminent danger, and only as a last resort when all means of self-rescue have been exhausted.

COSPAS-SARSAT is an international satellite system that provides distress alert and location data to assist Search and Rescue operations. It detects and locates the signals of beacons operating on 406 Megahertz (MHz). The position of the distress and other related information is forwarded to the appropriate Search and Rescue point of contact through the COSPAS-SARSAT mission control center network. The goal of the system is to support all organizations in the world with responsibility for SAR operations, whether at sea, in the air or on land. The COSPAS-SARSAT system provides distress alert and location data to rescue coordination centers for 406 MHz beacons activated anywhere in the world.

This personal locator beacon has been pre-programmed with the US country code. If your country of residence is outside the Unites States, you will need to have the beacon reprogrammed by a local dealer or service center, which may involve additional cost.

Please Note: This item contains a lithium battery and cannot be shipped to APO, FPO, U.S. Territories, international destinations or Hawaii, and are only available for in-store pickup in Alaska.

Very well made and designed with exception of frequency and volume of indicator beep, which can not be heard by older people or those with moderate high frequency hearing impairment. Lowering the frequency or increasing the volume would make the product easier to use for boomers such as myself.

I do alot of research before purchasing a product, and ACR was a score. Reliability and durability is key, let alone the thought of being caught in a slot canyon with all the various products out there and the SARlink giving the best odds... Bottom line when it comes to something that is intended to save a life in remote areas//extreme situations, this unit is a great choice. I see they came out with a smaller version, which I wish I had now.
I do back country activities, and also travel in areas with no cell coverage-- I try to take this unit everywhere I go whether alone or with a group of friends.

I was looking at this unit last fall because of recommendations from friends, but the price tag was a bit more than I wanted to spend. I ended up buying the less expensive subscription based Spot2. What a mistake. I spent the next several months with a defective product going through a recall with no replacements available and horrible customer service from Spot. I finally returned the Spot2 and purchased this ACR SARLink. I wish I hadn't been so cheap and bought this unit in the first place. It is a bit more expensive, but doesn't have subscription costs and when you actually compare the hardware you realize this is on another level. It has with much more powerful transmissions, multiple redundancies, and is built to military and Coast Guard specs. If you are looking for a device of last resort that could potentially save your life, I would highly recommend spending a few more bucks and getting a true PLB such as this.
