I've used the Five Finger KSOs for almost 3 years now, and have just bought my second pair. If you're on the fence about barefoot running I urge you to buy these shoes and give it a try.
Some background...I broke my ankle as a child and have had issues with my feet ever since. In 2010, I read 'Born to Run' by Chris McDougall and was inspired to give barefoot running a try. I bought some KSOs and never looked back. My chronic ankle and knee pain disappeared, and running was fun again. I went from painfully doing 10 miles a week to doing 5-7 miles a day, and my legs felt stronger than ever.
I've also worn KSO Treks and Bikila LS, and while both were quality designs, I always went back to the KSO. As I said earlier, I just bought a second pair, but not because I needed to; my original pair are still going strong, with a small hole in the stitching being the only wear and tear I've seen on them. The Vibram sole is dirty, but otherwise like new, and they've been through some rough terrain. To me, they are the most comfortable Five Fingers. The cons I listed aren't serious problems, but things you should be aware of. First, your feet will get wet running in the rain or through puddles. Second, the soles are pretty much smooth and running on wet asphalt or over ice and snow can get slippery. And last, the soles are thin; 4mm at most. Running on rough trails and on gravel or rocks will hurt. Vibram makes some great trail running shoes though so check them out if it's an issue.
The shoes themselves don't do more than provide some protection from the road; you can get the same benefits running completely barefoot. Read 'Born to Run'. Learn the science behind barefoot running then try it out for yourself. All I can say is that having had some serious foot and ankle issues in the past, I was pretty skeptical. But running barefoot has truly changed my life, and I've made it my mission to convert as many runners as I can.

Overall the KSO is a great all around VFF shoe. I recommend the VFF for anyone who likes the idea of barefoot/minimalist footwear. If you are new to the brand, go with the KSO. If you are only interested in running, try the Bikila I suppose, otherwise the KSO is a great entry line.
Not much to say really as most of the rest is preference based. If you love VFF and don't have a KSO style, get one. If you are unsure of whether or not you want to get a first pair of VFF just consider if you love the idea. If you do, then you will enjoy the pro's and learn from the con's (which are largely instructional to your posture anyways).

This is my first pair of 5-fingered light weight running shoes, so my observations are particular to the type of shoes, and not to the Vibram in comparison to other brands. In short, I way over did it on the first run. The clerk at REI had cautioned me that a slow start was advisable, but I thought the fact that I run with a forefoot strike meant my feet and legs were pretty well conditioned to barefoot running. I was wrong. My first run was a 5-mile run, mostly on streets and a little bit on turf. The run was fun, because barefoot running feels good. But a couple days later my ankle swelled and the inside of the arch was very tender. It has been several weeks since then, mostly with no running, and my feet are just beginning to recover. What I am learning is that there is a whole new set of muscles and ligaments that are used in barefoot running, not just in your feet but in your legs as well. I don't have any advice on a good 'break in' regimen, but I would advise going into barefoot running carefully and with full attention to how your feet and legs react. I've found it helpful to wear the shoes as much as possible in normal life, preferably outdoors. I've also found that running on turf, with its uneven surface, is surprisingly pleasant and seems to strengthen the feet and legs better than the predictable and unvarying (and hard)surface of a road.

The KSO is touted as Vibram's most popular VFF for a number of reasons but, in my opinion, there is one reason in particular that underlies all the rest: superior design.
The KSO is flexible, light, breathable and, surprisingly, durable. The strap enclosure for the foot is anchored by leather and wraps around the back of the foot, keeping the heel firmly in place to prevent sliding around in the shoe. The leather sole nicely cups slightly around the edges of the foot, offering minimal but much needed protection both to the foot itself as well as the shoe's upper. Finally, the insole is smooth and durable, although I would recommend wearing the shoes with socks if you tend to sweat a lot.
The first pair I had lasted for almost a year, taking three major hits to their integrity (twice being accidentally tossed in a dryer and once being used in a technical, rocky 50K mountain/road race). I was able to keep them alive for four months by patching the torn spots on the sole with Shoe Goo, but they did eventually wear down to the point that no amount of surgery could bring them back. Still, a full year is much more than I am used to getting out of more expensive running shoes that are less accommodating to my ultra-wide feet.
The KSOs do suffer from a few problems, though. Despite what many reviews say, the shoes do not have good traction on smooth surfaces and you will have to be careful when running on wet, untextured surfaces and charging up nigh-frictionless mountainsides. Fortunately, good running form helps mitigate these problems somewhat, but they should still be approached with caution.
The shoes do tend to wear out within a year, too, especially if you are an avid road/trail runner or prone to stepping on sharp objects, so do not expect much more than that. On the other hand, what well-loved shoes really last longer than that?
All I can say is that if Vibram designed more of its shoes like the KSOs (swapping out the sole styles, of course), then I might actually develop a shoe collection. As it stands, though, the KSO is the only style to win my heart thus far.

The first time you struggle to get them on, you will be thinking about sending them back...wait and leave them on for a couple hours. If you want to strengthen your foot to strengthen your run, try a pair. I was inspired to try these after reading the book "Born to Run" by Christopher McDougall. You can use these for every day hanging out, in the woods or even on the pavement, which is where I use mine most. I run 5Ks in them and go out some days on the road for 10 miles without any pain for fatigue. Its a natural feel, and it helps to fix bad posture and make the body stronger. These are better than any running/cross fitness I have ever bought. Get some!
