Comments about Yakima Powderhound Ski/Snowboard Mounts:

The front rack popped open (while locked) at freeway speed. The wind managed to pull one pair of skis out of the back rack. Luckily there were no auto accidents when the pair of skis flew off. I've been a big fan of Yakima bike racks for years, but I will never buy another one of their ski racks.

Comments about Yakima Powderhound Ski/Snowboard Mounts:

Before you buy this, check out the Thule. I wish I had, but needed something quickly and did not study the product before buying. I'm impressed that another reviewer here only requires a half hour to install theirs, I just came in from at least 90 minutes of frustration and sore frozen fingers to boot. Not an easy-on-easy-off, especially if you are working in the cold on an actual car, as opposed to on a bench in some nice facility where the engineers who designed this marvel must have spent all their time. And if your vehicle is taller than a compact car, arrange for a ladder because you will need it, because you have to be able to look down on it to see and access some of the twelve--yes, twelve--button-cap hex bolts involved in the process. Not included in the 90 min was a trip to the hardware store to buy bolts of usable length.

In actual use, for Nordic skis, I never double them up because pairs are clamped together with too much force. So cut the rated capacity in half. I expect this would be true for any rack of this type, not just Yakima.

So if you are OK with driving all winter with these on your car, or can mount them to quick-detachable crossbars, or are a glutton for punishment, go for it. Otherwise, there has to be a better way. Yakima makes some good stuff, but these are turkeys.

Comments about Yakima Powderhound Ski/Snowboard Mounts:

This rack works OK to hold skis and snowboards. It's easy to load and unload. No complaints there.

However, it's a bit of a pain to install. Takes me at least a half hour of fiddling to get it set up and ready for use. As long as you set it up before the season begins and leave it on, it's probably not a big deal.

After three winters, some of the parts are starting to corrode. I do a pretty good job of keeping my vehicle clean and try to wash my rack as often as I can, and I usually try to take the rack off at least once each winter and at least hose it off. However, as noted above, it's a hassle to re-install, so it's not something I look forward to or can do quickly on a Sunday evening after a weekend on the slopes.

I have a lot of experience with Yakima products. They used to be great quality and easy to use, but not so much anymore.
