Comments about Lowa Tempest Lo Cross-Training Shoes - Men's:

The Tempest has been my go-to shoe for mixed-surface travel, trail, and wet weather for years now. It needs an insole for proper arch support, but has been a nearly bulletproof shoe and worth the rather high cost. I picked up two pairs of this latest generation (with the serrated heel) knowing that my feet would be well supported and dry.
I've just returned the second pair and am looking for a suitable replacement. The reason? After only 2 months and 100 miles of mixed use, mostly on pavement, the heels of my first pair have worn through to the PU insole and are now wearing through the soft PU layer extremely quickly. In short order they will be too run-over to use. This is less than 1/2 of the wear I had been getting with the previous generation sole design.
Most shoes wear out at the outside heel first; we just naturally walk that way. But this new generation of Tempest (and Renegade, which shares its outsole design) has been so optimized to its primary purpose of trail and wet rock scrambling grip that the heel area is no longer thick enough nor durable enough to handle pavement travel. Lowa customer service agrees - they recommend that for mixed surface use Lowa's Trekking line - with harder, thicker rubber in the heel area - is more appropriate. You give up a tiny bit of wet rock grip, but the sole lasts far longer.
After all this, you may be wondering why I would recommend this shoe. It's because if you want a very comfortable, supportive, lightweight, and yes durable trail-only shoe that can handle heavier loads than you'd think, the Tempest and its similar-soled brethren are a great choice. But don't take it on the pavement, particularly if you're a heavy heel-striker.

Comments about Lowa Tempest Lo Cross-Training Shoes - Men's:

I have owned these boots for just over a year and they are my everyday boots for work and leisure. They were comfortable from day one and externally they are in great shape, with barely any wear to the uppers or tread. The inside is another matter altogether. The fabric covering the insole has worn through, which is not so bad - I can replace the insole. What is worse is that the lining has worn through in two spots, either side of the heel. I have patched them with duct tape because the shoes are so comfortable and in such good shape externally, but it is a real shame that the materials used in the lining do not match the durability of the outside.

Comments about Lowa Tempest Lo Cross-Training Shoes - Men's:

I just bought my eighth or ninth pair of this boot. I typically get a minimum of 500 miles out of a pair. These require NO break-in and are supremely comfortable from the first hike to the last, though I always add arch support. Eventually the linings come apart, as do seams near the toe. Lowa doesn't seem able to leave the design alone, and in some ways I don't like the current model as much as earlier ones, though the current tread seems to retain much better grip on loose, rocky slopes longer than the old treads did.

Anybody who plans to buy online needs to know that Lowa has changed their sizing standard within the past six months or so. Every prior pair of this boot I have bought (now going back about ten years), as well as a pair of Lowa Zephyr GTX, have been US size 9.5. The current 9.5 is at least a half inch longer than all of my prior boots, and the size 9 that I bought today at an REI store is the same size as my prior 9.5s. I would have been quite annoyed if I had to learn this from a pair purchased online. On the other hand, all of my street shoes and two pairs of chukkas from different makers are size 9, so perhaps Lowa has merely adjusted sizing to be compatible with everybody else's standards.

Comments about Lowa Tempest Lo Cross-Training Shoes - Men's:

A very good shoe, as said in the headline I used em everyday while I was on Kili. Never had any blisters and it only took about two good hikes before my trip to break them in. All around great quailty shoe, I would say my only pet peeve would be the seams on the side of the shoe. On my first pair I had to take em back because of how bad a tear there was on the side, I got a new pair and they have done better in regards to that but I can already see the seams coming apart. But it doesn't affect the overall preformance of the shoe. I am very much considering getting the Iowa Mountain Expert GTX Mountaineering boot for my upcoming climbs, I do reccomend this boot!

I have found these Lowa boots to fit my long, narrow feet better than most walking, hiking, or training footwear. One can spend the day hiking in the woods or traversing the streets of a large city and be comfortable in either setting. Since they look stylist enough to wear to dinner when traveling, they reduce the number of shoes to pack when traveling.

Just bought my second pair of these. The first pair are worn but still get work doing chores around the house - gardening and painting mostly. The new pair are my regular day-hikers. Most day-hikers seem to run wide, and I have narrow feet. These fit me well and are comfortable even after a ten-miler.

I purchased the Lowa Tempest Lo 10 years ago at REI and they "lasted" until this last year. Amazing quality, fit, comfort, and control. I am planning on purchasing another pair (perhaps a bit overdue) with my dividend!

I've used these for hiking in Belize, exploring Alaska, outdoors work, and as a casual shoe. Never had a blister once! Makes a wonderful 'travel shoe' as well! Can be cleaned up for dinner and not look out of place!

Comments about Lowa Tempest Lo Cross-Training Shoes - Men's:

I have bought the LOWA Tempest for years and witnessed the changes made to this model every time. The first version had a gusseted tongue, had great support, fit and just the right amount of shock absorbtion, especially in the forefoot area. The second model was a complete departure from the first, looked more like a trail runner, had no gusseted tongue, a practically flat interior and harder rubber midsole resulting in aching feet at the end of a day. The current model (as shown) now has more arch support but now they have added a raised seam underneath the toe area which is noticably uncomfortable even when trying them on. These ones are the first pair I have had to return. I wish LOWA would bring back the original Tempest, and quit messing around with the design.
