Each March, active REI members and REI Visa cardholders who earned a rebate receive a refund in the form of an annual dividend notice.

That said, why the heck is there only one size?? Come on, You are REI! Show a little muscle and tell Royal Robbins that either they ship you all sizes or you walk!

To me Billy Goat shorts are the gold standard for hiking shorts. The 5" inseam gives me the feeling of a true pair of shorts - love the freedom of movement. I've got several pair and I wear them around the house, doing chores, or running errands. Here in Texas I can wear them nearly year-round.

Props to RR for listening to the customers and bringing these back, however, in their absence I finally broke down and bought a few pairs of Patagonia Stand Ups, which I like much better and I don't know if I'll be going back to these shorts. As they say, you snooze you lose. If RR comes out with more colors I'll probably snag a pair or two, though. Overall, good shorts, but I've found some I like better.

Got a pair at REI, and have been wearing them half the summer. These are probably the very best quality all-around shorts I've ever purchased. If only they had a little more leg flare (for full freedom when rock climbing) and were an inch or so shorter (for the same reason), they'd be perfect. As another reviewer noted, it's hard to find a good hiking and climbing short, because most companies are making them so long that they bind at the knee. Way to go, Royal!

If you're sick of "shorts" that hang down at or even below your knees, then buy these shorts. The 5" inseam is about as "short" as you're going to get these days, and much much shorter than most shorts you'll find at retail (including the local REI store, where most of the shorts had 8" or 10" or even 12" inseams).
Freedom of movement and freedom from chafing, for the win.

I seem to go back to REI and buy one or two pair every year and have some that are approaching 10 years old. These are traditional cotton shorts that are not the long baggy getto costumes sold at malls. They are comfortable and the pockets, including back pockets work properly.
