Overall, I like this knife. It's a good, useful size, the grip is very secure and comfortable, and the FAST mechanism is handy.

On the downside, it wasn't terribly sharp when I got it, requiring me to spend a few minutes putting a proper edge on it. Also, the spring that propels the blade open is very weak. It sort of slowly glides open, as if it's in no particular hurry to get anywhere. I'll be dropping this off at Gerber to get the spring changed out. I have one other Gerber FAST knife that explodes open, so it's an easy comparison.

I bought this knife at REI, during their last amazing sale (love REI!). I was really excited to see that it had many features that I was looking for in a knife.
1. The handle has good texture
2. The tanto blade type is great for piercing and thrusting, and is stronger by very nature of design.
3. Assisted opening
4. Has a strike point on pommel for glass or other uses.

Here is what happened: Within days of buying the knife I used it in many capacities. I used it while camping, as well as in my public service job. I noted some SERIOUS issues, and then noted that some of these issues were echoed by other owners on Gerber's tactical website.

Issues:

1. The locking mechanism was quite sticky, and would not allow the knife to be deployed on several occasions. I followed the trouble shooting stuff on Gerber's website, but the fix did not last long.

2. When it is even slightly wet, the locking mechanism becomes even more sticky, and further hinders blade deployment.

3. The metal seems soft, and burred very easily with light use. I realize that this knife is a made for duty, and might be a little softer, which makes it easier to sharpen, but this was ridiculous. The blade burred at the top, as well as in the serrations.

4. The blade wobbles after locking fully in its deployed state. Again I tried to fix it, using the information given on the Gerber site, and the fix lasted about ten minutes. I did use the proper tools stated on the site as well.

5. Rusts very very easily, with minimal contact with fresh water (most steel corrodes with contact with salt water).

I just don't feel that I can count on a knife with this many failures and malfunctions.

Overall, the knife wasn't the best Gerber I have owned. The serrations had a lot of burrs, you could cut something with the blade 90 deg. on its side. Sounds useful... But it isn't. Second, the blade was pretty dull, it reminded me of a knife that was sharpened with a grinder at a lawnmower shop.

On the plus side, the opening was very smooth and the lock holds very tight. The grip is comfortable for my long fingers and that is all I can really give it as far as pluses.

I was using this knife for cutting and sharpening sticks. i would also use it to cut random cardboard boxes

The handle felt fantastic, had a nice weight to it, felt like it wouldn't break

The only bad part about it is that its made out of a not so good metal, when they blade snapped the metal looked very cheap.
When i broke the knife i was cutting a stick, i wasn't using the knife with full on pressure.

so if you have this knife i recommend that you only use it as a letter opener

Yes, it may be a little heavy or may even dull quickly but this knife was standard military isssue and is not meant as an everyday pocket knife. Notice the tanto point is meant for piercing/thrusting not cutting and its going to have some added weight becasue it was made for use in tough conditions on the battle field. It is a lot lighter with its G-10 handles compared to its brother the 06 fully automatic version. I think this knife is a great buy. Its tough, comfortable and contours your hand normal and reverse grip, lanyard hole for 550 cord, and strike pommel. Im in the military myself and carry this everyday. Great product!

Gerber has done another phenomenal job with this knife! It is built like a tank, has a great handle, which gives you a solid grip even when wet and is easy to use when wearing gloves. The knife is made out of a more entry-level stainless steel which is really easy to sharpen, but unfortunately doesn't hold an fine edge for too long. It lasted me a whole five day trip where I used it to split wood, gut fish, and held a pretty good edge the whole time. The knife uses a piston locking mechanism to open and close which opens sharply, locks into place with a nice snap, and feels solid even under heavy pressure. Overall, this is a great knife. 4/5
