Rated2out of5byShandoofromWish they kept the original designI liked the style from 5 yrs ago much more than this design. The belt is not the clip type any longer and when washed, falls off the pants. I've taken the belt off my old pants and put them on the new but they also fall off the pants when washed due to the poor design of the belt loops. Also, the cargo pocket on the right used to have a zipper which these don't--I liked having the added assurance nothing would fall out in the old style. I hope the Product Mgr reads this as the design has suffered with the new style.

Rated5out of5byBuschwayfromBest pants ever! This is the 3rd brand of convertible pants that I've gotten for my husband over the past 8 years. He loves convertible pants and says that this particular style and brand are his favorite. We'll definitely be buying more in the future.

Rated4out of5byCrookedRiverfromREI seems to be listening...Own 3 pairs of these to replace Eddie Bauer pants of similar construction (EB changed for the worse). Worn while hiking, sightseeing, and watching football on tv. Dried in minutes after crossing a river on the trail. Warmer than you'd think in Winter! One of the few hiking pants that has a zippered (back) pocket. My choice to replace the Eddie Bauer hiking pant that switched to ALL velcro, smaller pockets. REI cargo pockets wide enough to fit whole hand in--very useful for grabbing keys or pocket-knife in a hurry. Doesn't bother me the removable belt is flimsy; for hiking I'd be wearing a leather one anyway. 4 stars for length. I'm 6'2 and normally wear 32 length but these are too long without boots on. Switched to 30 inch. More colors, REI!?

Rated5out of5byMr ArrowfromComfortable and functionalI used these on a three day backpacking trip and they worked great. I never unzipped the lower leg [to convert them to shorts] however.
They were comfortable and were never 'in the way.' I appreciated the light weight fabric that seemed to be rugged enough. I can't comment on the long term wear of these pants but for what I used them for I'd definitely recommend them.

Rated1out of5byScouterMamafromFailing seams BUST durable performanceMy scouting boys were all over these pants. They love the functional design but after a few weeks on a high adventure backpacking trek, these pants literally fell apart at the seams. This pants are a direct cause of a visit to the Department of Motor Vehicles to replace a learner's permit that was lost due to a defective pocket seam that unraveled unbeknownst to the wearer!! NOT GOOD REI!! And there was cash money that was lost out of that pocket, too!
The lengthy convertible leg zips are a big pro that kept my guys angling for these pants. The pants are lightweight and required no hemming. We like the zipper closure pockets best vs. the velcro closure. The fabric is durable as well.
The belt was too narrow and rolled over which bound the wearer so I made a wider belt for use with these pants and added a side release clasp buckle that was more usable to the wearer.
We have 4 pairs of these pants and I was SHOCKED the other day when I went to do some mending to find that 3 of the 4 pairs were in the mending pile due to seams that had unravelled. I only thought it was one pair that I knew about due to the unfortunate loss of the cash and learner's permit but when I recognized 3 pairs, it was disappointing knowing REI's commitment to quaility. Upon closer inspection of each pair, nearly EVERY pocket had seams that had unravelled and at least one of the original double seams were completely unravelled and the second seam was on it's way out. We were fortunate that we had only one loss due to inferior pocket seams since there was potential in all pockets. One pair had the backside seam AKA "split your pants" seam completely gone. I sewed all 3 pairs back together and reinforced the pocket and inseams on each. I was surprised at the shoddy workmanship and this will definitely contribute to our decision to purchase again. I would take them back to REI because of their FANTASTIC return policy but now that I have repaired them, I feel my repairs make them a better pair of pants than what I would get to replace them with new ones (potentially inferior seams again) with the replacement policy.

Rated4out of5byFast FoxfromGreat pants for all occasionsI have purchased these pants in the past now having all the shades and colors REI has. These last pair though were cut too long although they are the same dimensions as the others. Other than that they are my main pants for all occasions. Great year round. In summer converts to shorts in a jiff. In winter just put on some long johns underneath and they are plenty warm.

Great for travel, since the legs can be shortened so quickly.
Appreciate the color-coded zippers.
