      I returned my Rock-n-roll

Comments about Kinetic Rock-N-Roll Fluid Bike Trainer:

I loved the idea of the Rock-n-roll and I enjoyed using it. I used it off and on for over a year and finally returned it because of a couple problms:
            1) I could never get enough resistance from the flywheel that came with it. I was always in gear 26 (on a 27 speed MTB or road bike). There is a pro flywheel available, but I felt at this price point it should be pro level.
            2) I got the kurt training mat with my trainer and my road bike tire would hit the floor while riding. It quickly wore through the mat and damaaged the floor underneath. I blocked up the trainer with some books, but this was again not commensurate with the price of the trainer. In case you're wondering, I'm about 210 lbs and was riding a standard 700c road bike.
            What gives?

Comments about Kinetic Rock-N-Roll Fluid Bike Trainer:

I "hear" Kurt Kinetics are the best so this review only really applies to folks with 29er mountain bikes.

Quite simply the unit is just too small to used on this kind of bike. Although REI doesn't mention anything about size limitations, I visited the manufacturer's site before purchasing and they said it would work up to 29", but I can attest that this just isn't the case. A 28" mountain bike is about the largest it will take. That said, a 29" road bike would likely fit too considering the small tire. Anyway, it looks like I get to return either my bike or the trainer now.

I set this up in my basement in a work out area and it is a gem. I love being able to slip away for a great workout. The product is solid and enjoyable because it locks the tire in snugly and it allows the bike to move back and forth and not feel like you are bending the tire. I have been trying to get into biking for my husband and this trainer is really helping my passion grow.

Easy setup, smooth operation, movement gives decent simulation of being on the road both in and out of the saddle. Much quieter than the previous trainer I had. Need to keep at a moderate to high resistance to minimize bouncing sensation. Works well with the rotating front riser ring. Comes with a good training video. Gave this one as a gift but have had the same one for 2 years, use it 4 times a week for 6 months a year, no problems. Beats riding in the snow!

Comments about Kinetic Rock-N-Roll Fluid Bike Trainer:

re: Bounce from my previous review
I changed out the kurt kinetic turntable riser for a cyclops fixed riser and it DID reduce bounce a quite a bit. You still bounce but its not as bad at lower resistance and higher cadence.
You do loose the handlebar mobility, for me that wasn't an issue.
Still a great trainer and another solid Kurt Kinetic Product.

Oh yes, did I mention its bright green??
Its a nice colour (really) but if you do one legged drills the paint will chip as your cleats (if you have them) rest on the top of the trainer.
The older Kurt trainers were powder coated (dark steel blue) and were bomb proof re: scratches

Comments about Kinetic Rock-N-Roll Fluid Bike Trainer:

This is another great product from Kurt Kinetic.
I've had their road trainer for years and its worked flawlessly. I wanted to upgrade so I chose the rock and roll trainer. I've had it now for 3 months and use it about 3 times week for tempo, super spins, hills and aerobic training.

Although I think its a good trainer I think it has some drawbacks that are worth noting.

Here are my stats because I think they affect whether this trainer will work for you.
                    I'm female 5'10" 190lbs
I'm heavier but not unfit. Sure my racing days were in the 150lbs but that's life.
I used to race, but ride several times per week
as well as run and swim.
I've ridden on kurt kinetic trainers for over 10 years and my pedal stroke is pretty smooth (sure it can always improve) but its NOT choppy or square.

                    Pros
                    - Smooth (as per all Kinetic trainers)
                    - Quiet
                    - Very stable
                    - Wide base (make sure you have enough room as this thing has a wider foot print than the other kinetic trainers)
                    - Easy set up (the new manual has pictures)
                    - MUCH better locking nut on the axel. Its easy to use and get the bike in quickly, efficiently and safely
                    - the side to side rocking motion is good and my butt wasn't as sore because the bike was moving with me.
                    - side to side rocking does feel like the bike moves under you as if you were riding outside
                    - I used the turntable riser for my front wheel and that makes things interesting, you do have to pay more attention because of the rocking and front bars moving. but this is OK, and keeps things interesting.
                    - Better on my carbon frame? well this my be psychological, but less torque on the frame seems like a good thing.

                    Cons
                    - this thing bounces (up and down) a lot when you are using less resistance and high cadence say a small front chain ring/21-15 rear cog
                    - bounce doesn't go away until you are in the large front chain ring / 18 rear cog
                    - the bouncing is REALLY annoying and made me a bit sick (especially towards the end of heavy workouts when I was pretty tired)
                    - no amount of tweaking of the nuts to tighten the rubber mounts had any effect

I have read on a few sites that heavier riders find that this trainer will bounce (as noted above) and that's certainly my experience. So I'd suggest for those of you on the heavier side try this thing out and see if it works for you before you buy it.

I have noted the bounce is reduced under these circumstances.
                    - ride with a cadence of above 120 using a front chain ring/ 21-15 rear cog
                    - physically rock the bike side to side as you spin
this reduces the bounce a bit but takes concentration and I can't focus on other things.
also noted that it increases my HR about 5bpm because I am adding extra movement. Noticed my form is not as good when I try this.

Generally lower cadence (below 75 rpm) at lower resistances reduces bounce but it does not go away entirely
High resistance (Large Frnt chain ring/15 -11 rear cogs) at most cadences seem to reduce or eliminate bounce

Overall I think its a great trainer IF you can avoid the bounce factor. I like the side to side motion and the comfort factor but for me the bounce just doesn't work for me.

Happy with product across the board. Solid construction. Easy set-up. It did get strong reviews on multiple websites. After several months of use this winter, no problems yet. Some noise as to be expected, but can still easily watch TV/netflicks. No complaints from family in adjacent rooms. Would recommend getting turntable riser ring.
