Comments about Victorinox 5.8 Watt LED Flashlight - '08 Closeout:
Being a Victorinox fan (I have watches & knives), I bought 2 of these - one for myself & one for a cousin.
Upon opening the one for myself, I was not impressed with the light output. It was a little brighter than my cousin's 2 AA LED maglite, but dimmer than my surefire G2 & fenix. The beam is very diffused, which provides a great area of coverage. However, it just doesn't seem right to me to use such a relatively bulky flashlight just to light up the immediate area, & a much smaller flashlight when I need more throw. I was impressed with the build quality, as it feels similar to a maglite. After a little thought, I returned the second one that was for my cousin & decided to keep looking for his gift. Since I had opened the first one, I decided to keep it & give it to my Father-In-Law.
Two months later with minimal use, the flashlight is stuck in the "on" position. The head was never removed, so it's not where he cross threaded the unit. After many attempts to twist the head off, I sprayed some WD-40 on the head to unfreeze it. After a few minutes gave it another attempt. This time, the cosmetic red silicone like band (around the head) snapped off in a chunk.
That's the last straw... the light is dimmer, bulkier, heavier & appears to be inferior in build compared to just about everything else we own. This flashlight is more about form rather than function. This flashlight will go back to REI. Even at the outlet clearance prices, this flashlight is not worth it. There's a reason why the flashlight can't sell out even at it's relatively deep discounted price.

Comments about Victorinox 5.8 Watt LED Flashlight - '08 Closeout:
The light is durable and with 2 C cells last longer than an AA flashight. It is a bit heaver also too. Note- the head does not come off or adjust the beam- if you twist the head hard enough trying to turn it, it will break. Battery replacement and on/off is controlled with the end cap. Screwing it in turns the flashlight on. To turn it off you have to twist it out. This is not how most flashights work and takes some getting used to. But it is a good all round light that uses 2 (not 3) C batteries.
