Small, light umbrella, but on the very first use in Washington, DC, a moderate wind blew it inside out repeatedly, and the handle fell right off. Very cheap construction

Comments about REI Compact Travel Manual Umbrella:

This umbrella is terrible. It's light and small, which is great. However, it feels like a cheap $2 umbrella. The first wind bent one of the corners. The second wind broke another corner. It's now useless.

I prefer the "REI Travel Umbrella" which is of much higher quality. However, the other umbrella is significantly heavier and longer. But that's a price I'm willing to pay for an umbrella the doesn't break after two gusts of wind.

Comments about REI Compact Travel Manual Umbrella:

Super-compact (and therefore, super-cute) umbrella that is small enough to carry comfortably in a jacket pocket. And sturdy, too. Mine has handily withstood a few blustery days here in San Francisco. It's convexed out on occasion without any damage. In addition, the long elastic lanyard is perfect for hanging on a bus hand rail when it's all wet and drippy.

There are some drawbacks to the size, though. I've already lost the tiny, little sleeve. It's somewhere in my room, I'm sure. The umbrella's smaller span makes it a perfect complement for proper rain gear, but on it's own, it's only equal to milder weather and for short trips to the train station.

In my opinion, something small and practical like this always makes a charming, unobliging gift.
