Comments about Nokian Hakkapeliitta W240 Studded Tire - 700 x 40:
One (of the two) that I bought had a bad bead, so it would not stay on the rim. But REI exchanged it no problem.

Comments about Nokian Hakkapeliitta W240 Studded Tire - 700 x 40:
I commute year-round in chilly Madison WI. The first year I got by on cyclocross tires. I fell a lot, but since I rode primarily dedicated bike paths, it wasn't a big deal (except for my ego). The second, I picked up a set of these at an REI scratch and dent sale. They were there because the previous owner had problems with them blowing off rims. So, I was careful that the bead was set when putting them on. They do sit a bit loose on my rims (which are on the small side for 700c), but once the tire is inflated, ride fine. It is amazing how well they do on ice (not the greatest in half-packed, rutted snow), which is my greatest problem in the city. In short, if you are considering this tire (which is excellent), make sure your rims are not small for 700c, and you are good to go. Oh, and when you return to regular tires in the spring, you will be amazed how fast you go.

Comments about Nokian Hakkapeliitta W240 Studded Tire - 700 x 40:
IGNORE THE COMPLAINTS ABOUT THESES TIRES BLOWING OFF THE RIMS! I have two sets of Nokian Hakkapeliittas: W240 and W106. Both work great on ice, none come off the rims. The reviewers below are trying to mount the tires on the wrong rims. Period. Excellent reviews at [...].

Comments about Nokian Hakkapeliitta W240 Studded Tire - 700 x 40:
I put these on my 29er for winter commuting. Being a mountain bike it has wider rims, so I had no problem mounting them. These do very well on hard-packed snow and glare ice, making riding in these conditions little different than riding on dirt or gravel. They're too narrow to offer much floatation in deep snow or heavy slush but that should be apparent. And on days when the trail is mostly clear with a few icy patches I can pump them up a little more and get pretty low rolling resistance, for a knobby tire anyway. They seem well-made and durable; no flats in the 6 months I've used them.

Comments about Nokian Hakkapeliitta W240 Studded Tire - 700 x 40:
I commute year-round in North-Central Vermont, where ice and snow are not uncommon for six months of the year. Whatever the weather, I ride sixteen miles a day.
This winter, I outfitted my new cx bike with the 35mm Hakkapeliitta W106 front and rear, hoping to enjoy lower rolling resistance over other studded snow tires. Unfortunately, the lack of studs near the edges of the tread proved problematical in icy ruts. So I ordered a 40mm W240 for the front wheel.
When the W240 arrived, I mounted it carefully, but it blew off the rim at less than 58 PSI.
I tried mounting the tire again, even more carefully, making sure the tire was well-centered on the rim. Again, the W240 blew off the rim at less than 58 PSI.
I could find nothing wrong with the bead on this particular tire, so I have to conclude that it is just oversized (since any 622 tire should fit on any 622 hook-bead rim).
I am sorely disappointed, and I think the two exploding inner tubes have left me deaf in one ear.

Comments about Nokian Hakkapeliitta W240 Studded Tire - 700 x 40:
I ordered a set of these after reading many reviews online last week. They came quickly and installed very easily. Ignore the other review stating that they are junk that blows off the rim. They tried mounting them on open pros which are clearly stated on Mavic's site as having a recommended max tire width of 28mm. Of course a 40mm tire is not going to hold. As a disclaimer I own the 26x1.95's, but had to respond to such a poor review once I tried them myself. After years of commuting with non-studded tires through the winter, these are a revolution for me. I haven't tried any crazy maneuvers on ice, because my interest is in not falling more than seeing how far I can push my luck. Nonetheless, they fit the bill perfectly for me. These tires won't make you invincible, but they will keep your wheels from flying out from under you without the slightest provocation. (e.g., I can pedal comfortably or corner slowly on a sheet of smooth ice, but if I stomp on the pedals in a middle gear I can spin the wheel easily.)
The only drawback that I see is they're heavy tires that really drag on my average mph. Getting there slowly is a small price to pay for getting there in one piece.

Comments about Nokian Hakkapeliitta W240 Studded Tire - 700 x 40:
I bought 2 of these tires and both blew off the rim (Open Pros) before 30 psi. I was checking the bead every 10 psi to make sure they were seated properly (after the first one blew), then each slipped off the rim at a spot where the bead was missing some rubber. Nokian says "Deserve Them" on the packaging, but no one deserves this garbage. Last Finnish product I buy.
