Comments about Planet Bike Eco Rack Bike Rack:

This rack is lightweight and sturdy. It holds panniers full of groceries or travel gear. (Or a Novara MainLine trunk bag with attached panniers) With the bags loaded, if I prop the bike up against something, I can make the rack sway a little. But, I'm TRYING to make it move, and it does very little. I also sat on the rack with almost no flex.

I'm not sure if it will hold up on a long-term trek or extended touring, but for the price (I applied my 20% member discount to this) one can't go wrong.

I don't know what that first commenter was doing, but the rack took 12 minutes to install and was easy.

If you can break this rack, then maybe it's time for something stronger and more expedition-minded (and 100 times more expensive).

I have this rack bolted to a well-ridden brakeless track bike with a 79" gear and expedition tires. The frame has a rear rack mount and the fork has fender mount.

Comments about Planet Bike Eco Rack Bike Rack:

The bolts to install the rack to the frame are too short. They simply aren't long enough to engage the threads on the frame. You can test your threads with something else and find they are fine. It's just that the bolts are too small and it's not possible to hammer the rack thin enough for them to work. Which makes the whole thing worthless. Go ahead, give up a day of your holiday weekend trying to get this garbage to fit on your bike. I wouldn't recommend this to my worst enemy. I just hope I can return this in a condition which makes it impossible to sell to some other sucker.

Comments about Planet Bike Eco Rack Bike Rack:

Picked up one of these at my local REI for my wife's Buzz (the green one). She wanted silver since it would match her bottle cage and some of the other parts on the bike (handle bars, shifters, etc.)

I did a rough test fit on a new Buzz in the store to make sure I knew it would fit somehow. Like several other reviewers I needed to stretch the side posts a bit to get it to fit on the mounting holes by the rear cassette. There is not much flex in it while it is mounted but do take care not to just yank on it to make it fit, since it still could break.

The Buzz is a hybrid bike but it has a mountain bike's gearing so a nice big cassete on the rear and three gears at the front. It also has v-brakes which did not affect the rack or install. I did test fit a rack designed for disc brake equipped bikes and it fit perfectly. Probably would have been easier to mount. Just an FYI for anyone who doesn't care about color.

Once I got the bolts on the sidearms installed (you may want to thread a bolt through the holes just to get rid of any excess paint from the factory)getting the stabilizing arms bolted to the seatpost area was easy.

After the install and a quick stability test (wiggling the thing) everything looked and felt great! The rack is very lightweight, which makes it deceiving that it would be so sturdy.

            Highly reccommend.

I knocked one star off because it wasn't a perfect fit but bending the sidearms is part of installing these racks I suppose.

The rack fits beautifully on my 700 hybrid. I did not have to bend the flat upper mounts at all. I suspect some people have tried to attach these mounts to the *outside* of the braze-ons, which would, indeed, have necessitated bending. But the mounts lined up perfectly with the *inside* of the braze-ons. Most braze-ons are threaded on both sides, no?

Comments about Planet Bike Eco Rack Bike Rack:

I got this as a Christmas gift 2 years ago. I am very pleased with the construction and size of this rack. I began using it on my commute to and from work (32 miles round trip). It did an outstanding job carrying lunch, extra clothes, and work boots.
Then I rode the Great Allegheny Passage last July with my all gear on it. I didn't have a front rack; only this one in the back. I did the camping thing which meant more weight. I think I had about 45 to 50 lbs. on it. It performed flawlessly. GREAT PRODUCT. It's mounted on my Jamis Aurora tour bike. I don't know how it would be on another style of bike or on a dirt path. But packed limestone and regular roads didn't bother it!

Comments about Planet Bike Eco Rack Bike Rack:

I've been using the black version of this rack for about two years. It's on a hybrid bike that I use for work, school, and errands. I've attached two folding metal grocery baskets to it and occasionally also strap a trunk bag to the top.

I routinely carry loads consisting of textbooks, a laptop, change of clothes, and lunch... I've gone shopping for everything from groceries to gallons of paint... this rack has performed solidly.

I do agree with those who have said that the bolts provided for attaching the bottom of the rack to a bike's frame eyelets are just a little too short. After a few weeks of use, one bolt worked its way out on the road (which I didn't notice until I got home, so the rack is substantial enough to have survived off-kilter for a few miles). I replaced both with longer bolts from the hardware store--no problems since.

I remember having to do a fair amount of monkeying around to install it initially, but I've removed and replaced it a couple times since then without difficulty.

The rack is starting to show a little bit of wear in the black finish, but this is probably mostly my fault from an initially sloppy installation of my grocery baskets. This is purely cosmetic and not a major concern to me.

I've only ever used this rack in a commuting/errand context, but would consider putting it on my road bike for longer/overnight trips. My boyfriend has used the same rack (silver version) on a mountain bike with good results.

Overall, I've been very happy with this rack--especially considering the low price--and anticipate using it for years to come.

Put this on son's commuting bike last year and it is broken already. He put 25-30# book bag in side baskets attached to this rack. The baskets held up to the weight but not the rack. Vertical stay broke revealing interior rod (no wonder it is so heavy compared to my Blackburn rack). Inner rod has kept the rack in place, but it now wobbles around and makes putting weight in that side's basket unstable. I will replace this with another brand.

Comments about Planet Bike Eco Rack Bike Rack:

Bought this rack probably 9 months ago now. I ride 6-30 miles daily and have a cheap bag mounted on top. The rack took some muscle to install since it didn't want to stretch wide enough to get around my Diamondback Sorrento but it's stayed put since I put it there. I don't have much weight on the rack but dirt paths, stairs and curbs have not managed to hurt this thing.

I did have one instance of rattling, and that was because I didn't tighten a bolt properly. It seems any problems with this rack are OPERATOR ERROR.

On that note, take care when installing with the supplied bolts, they are aluminum and I stripped the heads on two of them.

I just got this to replace a 30 year old rack that got bashed up. In the store it seemed light and the side rails were wide but accommodated the hooks for my panniers.

The problem is that the vertical supports have too large a diameter close to the point of connection. The result is that round part of the rack tube comes up against the round bar of my seat stay so there is a large gap since the Allen screw can't bring the two pieces together.

My bike is a fuji cross bike and I take the rack on and off a lot to do cross races, so while I left it on this time, I will probably take it back.
