Comments about Patagonia Down Sweater Full-Zip Hoodie - Men's:
This is my first review but best REI purchase in 35 yrs. The sweater vest is comfortable and versatile around town, at the beach & on local trails. For mid-Atlantic coastal area from VA to NYC, it is just what I was looking for. Hood is recommended for wind protection though best if over a cap or other hat. When worn over a sweater, temperature range can be brought down into 20's - otherwise 30's. Lightweight and high quality down fill allows it to be compressed into very small space for packing. You probably should know that chest/torso area is loose and not slim fitting if that's important to you. Save up your 20% coupons and splurge on this purchase.

What a stupid list of REI uses for a down jacket: casual wear, everyday, office, going out...
How about: staying warm on an cold night in Escalante; keeping the bone chilling wind off your skin on top of Mt. Timpanogos; or just staying comfortable while belaying your climbing partner in AF Canyon late in the year.
I love this jacket. While I've watched others lose feathers all around me, I've only seen them a handful of times from my own. After washing it, it regained its loft quickly. It keeps me warm and the hood is a MUST. Trust me, when it's 0 degrees it makes all the difference.
But listen to the manufacturer- if you only need the jacket for "office" or "casual wear" maybe you should go with something else.

This jacket was something I waited for for a long time... totally worth the wait! It's light as can be and breathes well and very warm as well. Don't wait go ahead - it's well worth the $$$$$!

Goal= to replace an old winter jacket.
Where: Live in northern OH.
I am tall and skinny. I'm usually cold if it's colder than 70 degrees (maybe 80!). Usually wear 36-38 size jackets. Ordered small. It fits big but I plan to layer under it at times so Im happy with it.
Uses: everyday winter jacket, winter hiking, standing in the cold (I'm a track coach) and wind.
I wasn't able to get the jacket until the end of February. That being said:
The jacket is extremely light. I can hardly tell I have it on. It doesn't limit my movements at all.
Hood is really large but is designed for helmets. I won't use that, but it does cinch down really well and moves easily with my head. If I turn my head, the hood turns too. Hood makes the jacket very warm.
I've worn this jacket in temperatures from 25-45 F. I've worn it in high winds, in sleet, and in a light rain. Wind chills have been in single digits. It's done a great job of keeping me warm. Very windproof. Very warm, esp with the hood up. I typically have had a sweater or sweatshirt on in temps <40. For temps <20, I'm anticipating needing another layer (monkey jacket/ fleece will make this sucker very formidable). In walking through rain it does a decent job of shedding the drops but feels like a wet trash bag on your skin. Not surprising and it's not designed to be in the rain for any extended period. Its fine for a few minutes.
Construction and materials seem good. Good solid stitching. I haven't found the zipper to be an issue (had read some reviews where people had problems). Drawstring around waist will be nice. Good sleeve and coat lengths. Very warm hand pockets and this zippers are great. It is still a puffy jacket but not nearly as out of control as many I've seen.
It does stuff into the inner pocket but it'd be a pretty solid pillow if you were hiking.
It's been a good combination of comfort, warmth (within limitations of it's weight), style, and function. I'd get it again. Expensive yes, but also super light and pretty gosh darn warm.
Service and delivery comments:
Delivery arrived after 3 days. Was on 7-10 day delivery plan. Very nice to get it earlier than expected.
Really would have liked the brown jacket with yellow zipper but size not available. Ended up with black, but that's OK.
