Comments about REI Taku Jacket - Men's:
I use this jacket for hiking and as a casual wear.
The jacket is light weight and waterproof.
The side zippers are great but are to close to the pocket zippers. Sometimes while trying to open the pocket zippers I'll open the side zippers instead.

Comments about REI Taku Jacket - Men's:
Great jacket for layering. By itself, on top of a short T-shirt, is an over kill as a simple (warm day) rain jacket. There are cheaper and lighter alternatives for that purpose. Where Taku jacket shines is when layering in cold wet weather is required. With wool base layer and nano puff mid-layer then Taku as outer layer works extremely well for extreme cold (and wet) conditions.

Comments about REI Taku Jacket - Men's:
Bought this a few weeks ago. Only been tested in a light rain so far but it held up fine. It's nice that it's not plastic feeling or noisy like some other rain jackets.
A lot of the reviews say it's good for winter sports, but it's true to specs and not insulated. Make sure to have under layers if you'll use this in the cold.
It would be nice if it had an interior pocket or two.
Bought it for hiking, which it's a little heavy for, but for the price and comfort I'll make due.

Comments about REI Taku Jacket - Men's:
I bought this jacket with the hopes it was going to be a good 3 season jacket. It is wind proof and fairly waterproof. I noticed a pull in the fabric after wearing it outside on a walk with my son; first time worn. Not sure if it was there or not at time of purchase only a couple hours before. The fabric pull did seem to leak water through. The jacket also had no hood hold down so the hood is always in the way and hitting you when bending over and such. I still think the jacket has uses but I returned it for the flaw.

Comments about REI Taku Jacket - Men's:
Had a huge downpour in Texas over the winter about a week after purchase, tested it out and didn't feel anything. The rest of December had a couple more showers, and i wore this jacket everytime since i was afraid the water proofing would wear away like others had mentioned, it didn't. Then, i tested it in a rare snowfall in Texas. Again, didn't get wet and was nice and warm. In January, went to crested butte for some skiing and it snowed/ whiteout the entire time. Temps constantly hit the negatives (-14 being the coldest) with winds of 30 mph, someone in our group actually got minor frostbite (he went snow mobiling). I felt fine with a couple layers. This is an AMAZING jacket. Handles wind great, is warm, is compressable and light weight, hood fits over helmets, a great jacket to have.
Some things to be aware of, i wear this jacket when mountain biking as well, and it gets clammy/ too hot when temps hit 50-60 (for me personally) even with pit zips completely open. YMMV. Wouldn't really call that a con.

Comments about REI Taku Jacket - Men's:
Have used this jacket for casual wear, but have found it to be less than appropriate for cold weather (below 30 F). Will be a great jacket at elevation during warmer 3 seasons and may be good for skiing, provided a good base layer is used, but if you're looking for a winter jacket, this is not the one.

Comments about REI Taku Jacket - Men's:
I do not write reviews for anything, BUT I had to for this Taku jacket. I love it! I am very conscience about the products I purchase. I have had the ALL the top of the line Gore-Tex jackets out there on the market. I have to say that this jacket is by the far the best fitting. It conforms to my body and allows me to move freely. For a year plus I would research and buy and return jackets left and right to get a jacket that fit correctly. It is a tailored fit, just like a fine suit. I was so impressed with this jacket that I bought another one. The only down side to this jacket is the color choice and pattern. REI designers please create a SOLID COLOR only Taku!

Comments about REI Taku Jacket - Men's:
I purchased this coat to keep rain and wind out. It did just that. I took it to the top of Mt. Mansfield proper, the Adam's Apple, and also Camel's Hump in VT. Temperatures were in the mid to upper 20s with moderate snow driven by 30 to 45 mph winds. In the lower elevations was rain. With two layers underneath (mid-weight long sleeve and a t-shirt) the weather was kept out, and the wind was stopped dead. My only complaint is that I coud not wrap this coat around my face to stop the burn of wind driven snow.
To those who say this doesn't breath well: Of course it doesn't. It's a raincoat. It's not magic. It keeps rain out. Unfortunately, it also keeps some dampness in. The REI associate at REI Conshohocken told me it won't breath until internal humidity is around 70%. I was okay with that, because this coat kept the 100% humidity on the outside from getting in.
If you plan on hiking and sweating, I recommend you wear breathable layers underneath that still retain their insulating properties when damp. If you do, I think you'll be quite satisfied in taking this coat into unfavorable conditions.
