Comments about Yakima HoldUp Bike Hitch Rack:
Very easy to load and unload. Seems to hold bikes securely. I have a 2" hitch and it seems to be stable, even on dirt roads, although I have not done any really rugged roads yet. It drops down a little below horizontal, but I still have to loosen the bike closest to my hatch to make enough room to get the hatch open. I don't have to completely remove the bike, just loosen it enough to get that extra inch. (I have a Forester). I knew that would be an issue though, so I have no complaints. It is solid and I plan on getting the attachment to carry 4 bikes.

Comments about Yakima HoldUp Bike Hitch Rack:
This review is for the 2" HoldUp.
Having used the rack for a month I agree with most of the advantages and disadvantages mentioned in the reviews here.
It is expensive and based on the number of failures reported I expect something will break sometime.
It is fast and easy to load and will accomodate my Townie.
Since I take it on and off frequently I found a nice wrench to use:
GearWrench 15/16" reversible combination ratcheting wrench
Overall, there are not many choices for this type for rack and I am pretty happy with it.

Comments about Yakima HoldUp Bike Hitch Rack:
After a killer ride it's great to not have to wrestle your bike to the top of vehicle. Very solid! Looking at bikes in rearview window going down torn up dirt roads, bikes barely move. (2" Adapter)

Had a 4 bike carrier that was hard to load. I can install bikes in seconds with the holdup rack. I am 54 and it is soooooooooooo easy.

Comments about Yakima HoldUp Bike Hitch Rack:
Bikes go on and off in 3 minutes! The rack only contacts bicycle tires so there is no possible damage to paint or bike. Can quickly put rack on another vehicle that has a receiver unlike roof racks. I do suggest stapping the hook to the tire on the back bicycle so there is no possibility of the hook disconnecting frome the tire(the bike would fall off and drag on the road being held by the other wheels securing stap). For security I used a key lock receiver pin. Additionally, the rack with or without bikes could quickly be stollen by removing the pivot pin, so always us the included locking cable which attaches to the end of the pin or buy the Yakima pin lock. That's why they make one. I have been a mechanic and this rack exceeds my standards!

Comments about Yakima HoldUp Bike Hitch Rack:
It holds my recumbent on the outside rack and I can put another bike on the inside rack. I can't fully open the back door on my Rav4 when the rack is on, even when I lower it, but I can live with that. I have a small wheel on the front of my bike, and it works better to hook the holddown over the frame. Locking cable could be longer. Rack and bike feel solid and secure.

Comments about Yakima HoldUp Bike Hitch Rack:
After using roof racks for many years, I decided to try this and I love it. The previous reviews already touch on the basics, so I'll just highlight a few things:
* The rack tilts down to allow access to the hatch/trunk even w/ bikes already loaded. While this is true of my set-up (2011 Outback w/ 2" Hidden Hitch), the hatch might not have enough clearance to open on other cars.
* The pin that holds the rack level or upright seems robust. It's spring-loaded, so I can't imagine it backing out unintentionally.
* For me, the rack is too large and heavy to leave installed all the time. In the "up" position, it completely blocks access to the hatch. When lowered, it occupies a lot of space around the bumper, so it's hard to maneuver cargo in/out of the hatch. As a result,I only have it installed when I use it, which is about once per weekend. Fortunately, the installation is simple, but I could see that as a deal-breaker for some.
* When putting it together for the first time, one of the threaded holes in one of the bike trays was stripped out. Annoying, but REI was very helpful about immediately getting me a new one.

Comments about Yakima HoldUp Bike Hitch Rack:
We bought this rack after selling my pickup truck and buying a Subaru Outback. I didn't want a roof rack, and I didn't want anything that used a fork mount to carry our mtn and road bikes. This rack seemed to fit the bill. A pricey bill at that though. But, I coughed it up, and took the rack home. Within 5 minutes, I had figured out that the bolt that is used to attach the rack to the hitch receiver was too short. Apparently, Subaru uses a beefed up receiver that has two extra plates of metal on the sides, and the bolt provided for a 1 1/4" receiver was not long enough. So, back to REI we went, where we purchased the bolt for the 2" receiver. It works, but it is really ugly, and sticks out almost an inch more than it should, and makes the safety clip look ridiculous. Once bolted on, and with the bikes snugly in place, the rack is pretty solid. Not much bouncing or swaying at all. And, loading and unloading is much easier (and safer for your bikes and car) than a roof rack. The only other thing that bugs the feces (can you tell this was censored by the REI website?) out of me, and that cost 'em a star in my rating, is that the locking cable that comes with the rack is too dam (Yep. Can't even get by with that one) short. I know this has been mentioned in previous reviews, but for the money, Yakima could provide another 8 inches or so of cable that would allow someone to wrap/lock all the wheels of two 29'ers. It makes you wonder if the people who design these things ever actually use them! But, other than that, this rack is an expensive, heavy-duty (and heavy) hitch rack that should last a lifetime and satisfy most people looking for such a thing.

Comments about Yakima HoldUp Bike Hitch Rack:
The rack is relatively heavy, but that makes it stable. It is very easy to put two bikes on and take them off. I suspect that 4 bikes would be a problem with the 2-bike add-on. It replaced a 4-bike mount on the roof of a new Subaru Outback that didn't work at all well. We now have two bikes on back, and for vacations or special events, two on top.
