Comments about Yakima SkyBox Pro 16s Roof Box:
Bought this to load my bulkies... sleeping bags, pillows... and other things that take up a lot of space in the car, but are relatively light weight. Have driven in heavy rain and wind without incident... or leak. It's relatively quiet at highway speeds. Beats zippered bags. Locks securely. Will travel coast to coast soon. Happy to have this on my roof.

Comments about Yakima SkyBox Pro 16s Roof Box:
Living in Elk Grove/Sacramento we plan trips up to South Lake Tahoe. During winter we would take our Subaru Legacy for the AWD rather than the FWD Honda Odyssey minivan. Since the Subaru doesn't have as much cargo capacity as the Odyssey I looked at getting the roof top cargo box as an alternate solution.
After much reasearch I found this to be the best one out there in terms of price, size (in relation to the car) and storage capacity. I have a couple bike racks that i left up there but during trips in the snow i dont think i would be doing much bike riding. If it decided to i could take one bike rack down and just slide the Sky box over further to allow the bike pedals to clear.
I am very happy with the box. Even during spirited driving I hardly hear it up there. I did loose about 1 MPG during normal driving though.
It does take two people to load the box on top of the car though but it's not too bad. I could probably manage the job if I laid a heavy moving blanket down.
The way the box gets secured to the bars is top notch. Much easier that the Thule box I have used in the past. Once it's locked in, it's not going anywhere.
I would recommend this to anyone. Especially Subaru Legacy owners looking for extra cargo carrying room.

Adds additional space on top without distracting from the car style. Complements and blends well with mid-size wagons. Does not seem to affect the car's driving ability. Little or minimal additional wind/ambient noise while driving.

Comments about Yakima SkyBox Pro 16s Roof Box:
I needed extra storage on my Jeep Liberty to assist me in moving from Alaska to Arizona for school. (I didn't want to deal with renting a U-haul so it was whatever I could fit into my SUV.) The storage is excellent. I can open it from the driver or passenger side. The only lame part is that the storage is up high and I'm only 5'3" so I have to open the rear passenger door and climb up my Jeep to access my storage. My shortness can't be helped and I wouldn't tade my Jeep for anything so I'm ok with a climbing commitment. Oh and Since I'm short I had to ask my 6'2" roommate to come out and help me lift it onto my car roof. Besides that part I managed the tightening and attachments myself without any trouble. And this product doesn't whistle or make contact with the metal on your roof.... so no worries regarding scratches, noises, or vibrations.I would totally recommend this product!!! It's a little pricy but you get a warranty that you can't get if you grab one off of [@]. A note on that.... I looked at [@] and I found only really old models or storage that had lots of missing/broken parts!! I don't recommend snagging one of these second hand if you can afford not to. REI has a great return policy if this thing has any manufacture issues and whatnot! I love you REI!!!I bought a bike rack too! I'm loving it!!!

Just used the skybox on a 4000 miles roadtrip and it worked like a champ. Installed on a 2009 Outback with no interference with the hatch or spoiler. Way quieter then expected and kept everything dry.

Comments about Yakima SkyBox Pro 16s Roof Box:
Just returned from a twelve hour round trip, all highway, and the Skybox did well. My main concern going into the trip was the stability of it. I kept the moonroof open to keep an eye on the front end. It does get buffeted some at highway speed but not enough to question its construction. Even in strong crosswinds and passing 18 wheelers you hardly know its up there. There was some wind noise but it was barely noticeable above the sound of Thomas the Train coming from the backseat. I attached it to our 2011 Subaru Outback and it fits perfectly. Back hatch opens fully with plenty of clearance. I've burned two full tanks of gas with the Skybox and my MPG decreased by about 2. Not bad considering how much extra stuff you can bring along. We packed three carry on suitcases and a large canvas bag in it with room to spare. The gargantuan double stroller, along with the pack and play, etc., occupied the way back. Our clothes were hot when we arrived but since it was 105 degrees outside, I won't hold it against the Skybox (we referred to it as the "Hotbox" for most of the trip). The cargo net is included with the Pro and works well. It doesn't span the entire length of the box but some sturdy hooks inside accept regular bungee cords well. A pad is also included but I didn't use it. I sprung for the titanium color since it came close to matching the car. Worth it? I guess so. We used our REI credit card so we'll get some dividend back as well. Downside: the price, but if you have two kids like we do and are considering a bigger car you could pay five times as much and still come out way ahead. It is heavier than I thought but still able to be handled by one person. It's about 50 lbs. With two people its easy to get on an off. Only time will tell how durable it is. The shell I'm not worried about. My guess is that if anything breaks it will be the hinges, the locks or the clamps. They seem durable but they are mostly plastic. You have to make those parts out of plastic, however, or the thing would weigh 100 lbs. It was a good buy in my mind as soon as I was driving home from REI in North Charlotte, empty, new Skybox attached, and saw a family pulled over whose makeshift tarp and bungee roof ball had exploded its contents all over interstate 77. Never with the Skybox!!!

Comments about Yakima SkyBox Pro 16s Roof Box:
I was looking for the most affordable option for adding carrying capacity, but after trying out several boxes ended up falling for this one.
The Thule Atlantis almost got me, but the SkyBox Pro 16s delivered everything I wanted, and matched the car too.
Still undecided I asked the salesman to help me see how the sizing would work for my Forester and once we had it installed, I decided to take it.
Installation was a piece of cake, easy access from either side, three latches per-side, tremendous capacity and heavy duty construction in an attractive packaging which will look good on any vehicle clinched it for me.
The main concern I had after reading other reviews was durability of the closing system, but now that I've been using it for a while I can only suggest that you never force it shut, which should go without saying.
The three latches need to all engage before it will lock and allow the key to be removed and it works very easily by just working them into fully closed position, starting first with any area that doesn't appear to be fully closed. If it still refuses to close, it's time to resituate whatever may be in the way.

Using it for camping gear. Have a Honda civic so need as much space inside as possible. It is amazing how much this holds. It is like the clown bus at the circus.

Comments about Yakima SkyBox Pro 16s Roof Box:
I use the Yakima SkyBox Pro 16s cargo box for road trips home to New Jersey from Virginia Beach on my 2012 VW Golf TDI. I even find myself leaving it on the car after I return from the trip because the reduction in MPG is minimal. (48mpg hwy w/o the box/ 44mpg hwy with the box)
The Yakima SkyBox Pro 16s is so huge (inside) and fits/looks nice on my car. I'm able to fit 2 large suitcases, 3 rather large duffel bags, a Pack n' Play, and 2 back packs. With all of these things loaded there is still room for loose items like blankets, clothes and shoes. The fact that it opens from both sides is great!! (but you need to make sure you have the opposite side locked as the lock doubles as the hinging system for the side your are opening.) I did drive through a pretty wicked storm and it was torrential rain for over an hour and everything inside was 100% dry.
**IMPORTANT** The base bars I have on my car are Whispbar distributed by yakima and they are extremely low (but awesome). There is not much space between the bar and the roof. The clamshell mounting system on the Yakima SkyBox Pro 16s works with these bars but I would suggest laying a blanket or sheet on your roof under the bars so when the clam shell mounts are open they do not scratch your roof as you slide the box on to your bars. The box did not scratch my roof but the first time I mounted the Yakima SkyBox Pro 16s I was concerned about them touching the roof as i was installing it on my base bars.
It is a little noisy, but with the sunshade to the sunroof closed and the volume on the radio at level 10 of 30 I forget it is even there.
