It just doesn't get any easier! The SteriPEN™ Journey water purifier system takes the guesswork out of the water treatment so you can enjoy clean, purified water while on the go.

  • System includes the SteriPEN Journey purifier, FitsAll water bottle prefilter, 1-liter BPA-free wide-mouth water bottle, SteriPEN carrying case and instruction manuals
  • Journey requires no pumping, chemicals, test strips, extended time-keeping or filters; leaves no aftertaste, will not clog and does not require lubrication
  • Innovative SteriPEN system uses UV light rays instead of chemicals to purify water for drinking
  • Ultraviolet (UV-C) light rays safely sterilize clear water by destroying 99.99% of protozoa (including giardia and cryptosporidia), bacteria and even viruses
  • SteriPEN protects you from risks that cause botulism, cholera, dysentery and typhoid, just to name a few
  • But if clear water is not available, no worries—the included cone-shaped prefilter clears particulates and debris from water
  • FitsAll prefilter fits the included Nalgene BPA-free water bottle as well as nearly any other size bottle; pour source water through filter, and clean water enters bottle
  • SteriPEN Journey is simple to use: Just press a button and gently agitate the water with a quick stir
  • Easy-to-read LCD screen tracks the progress of the treatment, counting down the seconds and displaying a happy face when successfully completed
  • Purifies 16 fl. oz. of water (cold or warm) in less than a minute, or 32 fl. oz. in a minute and a half
  • LCD screen indicates the volume of water selected, battery power, number of lamp uses and failure alerts
  • Small size fits most containers—use it in cups, mugs, water bottles and canteens; carries easily in a shirt pocket
  • SteriPEN Journey turns itself off once ultraviolet treatment is complete; light source can be used 10,000 times!
  • Watertight seals keep water away from the electronics; rubberized coating ensures secure handling in wet conditions
  • Low-power indicator lets you know when batteries need replacing; twist-off cap permits easy battery access
  • Long used by municipal water districts and bottling companies, low-level UV-C light treats water safely, and unit's light will not damage eyes or skin
  • SteriPEN Journey water purifier system includes 2 nonrechargeable lithium CR123A batteries
  • Use only on clear water, as cloudy, sediment-laden water hinders effectiveness

Since late 2008, all SteriPEN water sensors feature twice the electrode voltage of older models. The increased electrical current flow allows proper function in water with low conductivity such as snowmelt and even mineral-free distilled water.

Please Note: This item contains a lithium battery and cannot be shipped to APO, FPO, U.S. Territories, international destinations or Hawaii, and are only available for in-store pickup in Alaska.

WILL NOT WORK IN COLD WEATHER

Comments about SteriPEN Journey Water Purifier System:

Buried in the user's guide, there is a cryptic hint: "ambient cold" may affect battery life. The truth of the matter is that 40 degree temperatures will completely eradicate the charge in the lithium batteries needed to power this unit, and once the charge is gone it cannot be restored (it doesn't come back when the temperature warms up).

Case in point, a 4 night trip to Eagle Cap Wilderness, OR. The unit worked fine when I set up camp the first night. I purified 2 litres with no problems and was loving it compared to pumping. I kept the unit and spare batteries in the tent overnight, my water didn't freeze in the bottles, and it was definitely not below 40. Next morning no charge in the installed batteries or backups.

The user guide recommends keeping the batteries in your pocket in cold weather (it doesn't specify actual temperatures, which should have warned me). This is obviously not very practical, not to mention the hassle of constantly disassembling the unit every time you're done using it. And what are you supposed to do at night: sleep with them taped to your skin?

This is a great product idea, but useless for anyone doing anything other than day hiking in warm weather. Why it needs to run on this kind of battery I've no idea, but the idea was clearly not thought through with backpacking in mind. What trip are you ever going to take when the night time temperature isn't going to be 40 at some point?

I have never written a product review before, and I am writing this one because I think this product ought to come with a warning on the package. It's a clear case of deceptive marketing to my mind.

Comments about SteriPEN Journey Water Purifier System:

A good system that needs some further improvement. The smaller part of the funnel needs a way of locking into the bigger part for storage. The smaller part of the funnel need to maybe taper more so it stays in sports bottles better. The pen itself should be switched to an otical sensor and sometime gives you a negative response for no reason. To clear the negative sometimes you just needed to dry the pen othertimes you needed to remove the batteries and reinsert them. All and all the sytem worked and worked quickly, with no chemical taste.

Comments about SteriPEN Journey Water Purifier System:

Just got back from 5 days in Kings Canyon. This device seems to work well, but about 10 liters from one set of batteries is not good. Product indicates 50 liters, but we did not come close with two separate pens. If you like this device, bring lots of batteries.

Comments about SteriPEN Journey Water Purifier System:

I have used this for four years on an annual backpacking trip in Yellowstone. Having competed in the Eco-Challenge and used mandatory chemicals to purify water, I longed for something simple that didn't used filters that get filled with muck. I bet I have filtered 400 liters and each one takes no more than 90 seconds with this device. I love it!

Comments about SteriPEN Journey Water Purifier System:

Having the green filter for sediment is a big plus. Having a read out on the SteriPen that tells you if the water is clean was a big plus over lower cost SteriPen with out the filter. Some people have had issue with batter life but I have not had issue to date but only used it 10 times in the last year. I will say that I stopped on the trail at a river at the same time as another person that had a hand pump filter. In the same time I was able to purify 3 2.0 L cans he did one. Then I was back on the trail fast. The first time I used it i hand to get the hang of it but after that it has been easy and fast if you know how to do it.
