I usually really like BD gear and have had no problems with it in the past. This item, however, does not match up with BD's usual standard.

I purchased one of these from Black Diamond and it would not hold a charge. I then spoke with their warranty department and was sent a second unit that had the same issue and would not hold a charge either.

I just finished disassembling the first unit, and the rechargeable battery is just 4 NiMH AAAs glued together and wired to some charging hardware in the base. You could buy 8 rechargeable AAAs along with a wall charger for the same price as this unit, which is really just a dressed up set of 4 AAAs with performance issues.

Don't buy this thing. It's a waste of your money.

I purchased this because I was so pleased with the Black Diamond lanterns, I have two lanterns. I read the reviews here and hoped any issues were resolved.

I used this at home and the lantern shut off a few times which was odd it wasn't after an extended period of time just a few minutes. Took it on a weekend trip along with battery back up (rechargeable batteries AAA). This product did not last the lantern kept turning off and after the first 30 minutes would not even turn on. The AAAs were not only cheaper they lasted throughout the weekend and later a week.

This product is a waste of your time and money as it performs poorly. I would highly recommend the rechargeable AAAs.

Although we use the charger primarily after a weekend of camping, we also use it to keep the lantern charged in case of a power outage during the winter months. Luckily it hasn't happened yet but when I try the lantern before our first camping trip in the early summer, the batteries have always been adequately charged.

I bought this last year in order to try and have at least one device that did not require constant replacement of batteries. It ended up getting very little use due to time and circumstances, but nevertheless still failed. After 10 or so power charging cycles it refused to turn the light on for anything longer than 15-20 seconds. I have exchanged it for a new one [...] and hope that it was a first-run type issue and has been resolved.

The lantern is great, however, the rechargeable battery is not, and I would strongly advise against wasting your money. I have had to return 3 of these batteries for the same reason: All three would take only one charge which would last for about an hour, and then they would not take a second charge! There appears to be a problem with either the battery or the charging unit. At [$] I would expect a better product. Again, DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY.
