Comments about Salomon Quest 4D GTX Hiking Boots - Men's:

Really great boots. Not the most durable boots around, but when you consider weight, comfort and it, the durability is more than acceptable.
The first year I wore these boots I was working in the forest (research, not cutting trees) and 40+ hours/week on rough terrain. Sure, they aren't forester grade boots (which cost 2-3 times as much), but they worked very well. Enough protection for spending a lot of time off trail.
The second summer I missed all of the time I spent outside and hiked at least 20 miles a week on trail, I did 40 miles in a week a few times.
I know I put these boots to the test. If they fit you, get them.
They aren't too hot in the summer, and are warm enough in the winter. I don't know if they are warm enough to be boots to wear to long snowshoe adventures. That is the only short coming I can think of.
I put ~1000 miles on them, and liked them enough to buy another pair. The original boots are from early 2011, and seem identical to the new ones.
I had to use some shoe goo on the outside of the boots during the past winter to reinforce areas that I thought were compromising the waterproofing of the boot. Strucurally they were fine, and the shoe goo worked.
The boots have exceptional heel hold. I only had a problem last week when I experimented with new foot beds, which set my heel 1/4" higher. Which was dumb considering that the boots fit like a glove.
If I could find boots that fit like these, with the articulation and heel hold, but had a more durable sole with a rigid shank, I would be exstatic.
tl;dr: I bought a second pair because they exceeded my expectations.

75 miles on the boot, just got done with a 40 mile trek from Tuolumne meadows to Yosimote valley including Half Dome " a little slippage on the shinny granite between the cables going down". went through snow, water and creek crossing, no leaking what so ever. what a Awesome boot, a bit hot with my arch supports that don't breath that good. Note: I had a 55 lbs back pack on as well.

Wore these boots on a 40 mile backpacking trip through the smokies with a 30 lb pack. Had a minimal break-in period before this hike. Boots run true to size and are a decent selection for someone with a narrow foot. Boots are very comfortable and waterproof as well. Would recommend these to anyone looking for a sturdy but lightweight backpacking boot.

Comments about Salomon Quest 4D GTX Hiking Boots - Men's:

I usually use trail runners for day hikes and light backpacking. I bought these for more serious backpacking trips or muddy/snowy hikes in the fall and spring. I wanted a snug fit and after trying on a few pair in the store, i bought the 8.5 US size. That is very small for me -- usually I wear a 9.5 in other brands. Although it took a few hikes to break them in (longer than normal) I am now quite happy with them. They are comfortable, dry, durable (from what I can tell so far), sturdy-- a great backpacking boot that I hope will last me many years

Just bought these for my next big hike. 40miles across isle royal.. lots of wet and soggy up and down terrain. so i will update after that trip in june. so far i have had these for a week and have worn them every day. they get very uncomfortable on the sides of my feet due to the sturdy rubber strap on the sides and being very narrow boot.. ive tried several insoles to resolve this and it doesnt help. it seems to be lessing so im hoping its just waiting to be broke in. So far they are great except for that. lets hope its not a problem.

Comments about Salomon Quest 4D GTX Hiking Boots - Men's:

These are the finest boots I've owned in over 40 years of backpacking. I've used these boots for over 300 miles of wilderness backpacking thus far; including a thru-hike of the John Muir Trail; and have carried loads in excess of 55 lbs. The boots are study, very water resistant, very light in weight for their performance, give good ankle support, have good traction, and have shown very little wear. I purchased these boots initially because they were the only boots I found at REI that fit the characteristics of my feet; a longer second toe; a relatively wide forefoot, a narrow heel and not much arch. Even though my boots appear to have plenty of miles left in them I bought a second pair as a future replacement; just in case the manufacturer decides to stop producing them; please don't.

Comments about Salomon Quest 4D GTX Hiking Boots - Men's:

These boots are GREAT! I love the lacing system which holds exactly where you want it. The boots look great but feel stiff out of the box especially around the ankles. I don't know how some say "No break-in period required" unless they have wooden blocks for feet and steel hinges for ankles. It took me about 2 weeks of in and around wear before I felt like I could take them on a hike. After several 10+ mile day hikes I have yet to get a blister or even the slightest hotspot. I hate Monday mornings when I have to swap my Salomon's for my work boots.

Comments about Salomon Quest 4D GTX Hiking Boots - Men's:

I bought and returned 3 pair of hiking boots before finally deciding to spend a little extra $ on the Solomon's. I'm not typically a suscriber of "you get what you pay for". My last pair of hiking boots were middle of the pack Merrel's and they served me dry and pain free for 18 years. There was no sole left but they were so comfortable I just never wanted to get rid of them. The Merrel's began to leak last fall and I've been on the hunt for a comparable replacement. The Solomon's....WOW, these boots feel like slippers. I'm very susceptible to ankle swelling and pain depending on how a boot rolls from heel to toe. My last 3 pair were comfortable to wear, but were not so comfortable after a few miles. I've had these for a few weeks now and have done a few 9 mile hikes without even thinking about my feet. These are the best things since sliced bread.

These boots have been great. They will be my 'go to' boot fr this falls DIY backpack elk hunt in September and a few backing trips before that. They are out of the box comfy! I ordered a size too small based on some other boot brands. Go off your tennis shoe size when ordering. I returned mine in exchange for a 13, which is my tennis shoe size. Bingo! Had a friend buy some with same result in a size 9 and had to go to a 10. In other words, it runs true to size with our tennis shoe size.

Comments about Salomon Quest 4D GTX Hiking Boots - Men's:

I don't understand how/why everyone seems to like these boots!? I have a normal to narrow foot, and the toe box is so ridiculously big that I find myself clutching with my toes to feel like I have any stability/control. Sure you likely won't get a blister, but they provide you no control. The heel fits fine however.

The other main issue I have with these is the way the laces work with the "lock" system. It is very difficult to get the bottom half tight enough even with the lock system at the ankle because the way the laces don't grip the lace holes at all, so you can't get the individual lace "regions" to stay tight. Basically, if you pull the laces tight at anything below the lock at the fifth lace hole/holder without locking the laces in, and then let off any of the tension, everything just slips right back to completely loose instantly and you lose all tension. -they don't catch/stay tight. This results in a boot for which you can not tighten down "sections" of lace one "section" at a time to get the right tension at the right spots.

And, finally, the laces will absolutely come undone unless you double knot, they are way to slippery for themselves and the lace holes. I actually started to develop finger blisters from trying to tie/tighten the shoes because of the whole slippery lace and lock system.

I bought these last week based off of reviews and thinking they seemed to fit okay in the store. I was really hoping to like them once I started to wear them around the house and outside just a bit, but they are terrible. I rarely, if ever have returned anything to REI, but these are going back to the store tonight.
