Comments about REI Duck's Back Rain Cover - 40 Liters:
I have a Marmot Either 35 pack and I was hoping this cover could be much larger than the pack so it would cover external things attached to the pack. However, it barely squeezes on to my Eiger due to the tall skinny shape of the pack. It seems to have been designed for shorter, wider, fatter packs than the tall skinny Eiger. It would seem that the shape shouldn't matter but after berely squeezing it onto the pack, the sides of the cover freely flap in the wind while the cinching side is stretching to the max to stay on.
The materials are quite good and I believe the quality of this REI product will last a long time and do it's job. Just be mindful of the shape of your pack. In terms of liters, it does seem like a 40 liter pack, but not a tall skinny top loading pack like mine, more like a really large Jansport school backpack. In terms of waterproofing, It put it on my pack when a downpour came through on our most recent hike and it was fantastic. Originally, I sprayed waterproofing shoe spray on my pack, and this works for short rains or light drizzles, heavy rains make the internals wet. This packs should stop that. There is only one place the pack might get wet and that is the top of the pack where the straps attach. I could feel water dripping down the hood and from my shoulders onto this area, but I think the rain ended before it could actually soak the bag through.
Overall, it did a great job and I will keep it. I was just hoping for something much larger than my pack and instead got a cover that barely fits it. If you want extra space, order one size up.
