Comments about Pelican 1020 Case with Carabiner:

The box does what it is supposed to do. I use it for my phone in my kayak. When I'm out camping, someone in the party has to carry this block of plastic with all the phones, matches, and memory cards. It's heavy and it's bulky, but it lives in a world without magic. That is to say that one could likely not make a less bulky or heavy box that does what this one does.

Of course, you cannot take the padding out. Duh. Also, you cannot expect that it will always work. A couple of bits of detritus carelessly left in the seal will lead it to leak. However, if you are moderately careful about keeping the seal clear, which isn't difficult, the box will work. I've never head a problem with it and I've had it underwater repeatedly.

Also, don't count on it floating unless you are sure the contents of the box are not too heavy.

Comments about Pelican 1020 Case with Carabiner:

As a professional sea kayaking guide for years, this is the case we used to keep emergency phones dry on extended trips. A phone inside of this case that is stored inside of a dry bag will be safe from moisture and impact under almost any conditions. I bought my own and use it every time I am on the water. Having the clear side of the case facing out through a clear dry bag (or window) allows me to see incoming calls or weather alerts on my phone.

Comments about Pelican 1020 Case with Carabiner:

I am an avid mountaineer and during my last trip up Mt. St helens in the winter, this case kept my camera completly safe. I attached it to my backpack and glissaded down, with the camera bouncing the whole way. I opened it at the bottom and it was great! However, it had a little fog after the sun came out, but other than that it kept it perfectly dry and safe.

The only way this could improve is if it had more thermal insulation so when the white out comes around, it stays warm.

      Overall great product!

Comments about Pelican 1020 Case with Carabiner:

I got this to protect my cell phone on camping trips as I have a tendency to put it in a pocket then forget about it and I'd really like to not break my brand new phone! It fit snugly which is excellent (I bought in-store to find the correct size as there were many options) and clips securely to my pack. It worked perfectly on my last trip. It's a tad bulky, but that is how it is so well protected. It's a little pricey too, but it's much cheaper than buying a new phone! Overall I really like it.

i bought this because my friend has one. he used it for an emergency survival kit (fishing line, snare wire, fish hooks, etc) and small first aid supplies. I used it for the same thing.

i got the all yellow and he had the clear black. i suggest getting the clear black because it holds a little more.

a kid i know asked me if he could slam it on the ground and stomp on it hard. i told him he could and when he was done, it had minor scratches, but that was it. everything inside was fine! This is a PERFECT case. (also check other sizes at rei stores)

Comments about Pelican 1020 Case with Carabiner:

I FELT I HAD TO WRITE THIS AFER READING THE TWO NEGATIVE REVIEWS. PERHAPS THE COMPANY SHOULD HAVE AN INSERT IN THE SMALL CASES EXPLAINING PROPER USE AS THE LARGER CASES CONTAIN. I BOUGHT A LARGER CASE WITH THE FOAM INSERT FOR MY FILM CAMERA SO WHEN I BOUGHT MY DIGITAL CAMERA I NEEDED A NEW SMALLER CASE. THE COLORED INSERT MUST REMAIN IN THE CASE SINCE THAT IS PART OF THE SEAL. AND YOU ALSO MUST BE VERY CAREFUL THAT NO SMALL SAND OR DIRT PARTICLES INTERFERE WITH THAT SEAL OR IT COULD INDEED LEAK. I AM WONDERING IF THE TWO REVIEWERS THAT HAD BAD EXPERIENCES HAD ONE OF THOSE ISSUES WITH THEIRS AND THAT WAS WHY THEIR CONTENTS WERE DAMAGED. THESE ARE GREAT CASES AND COME IN A VARIETY OF SIZES SO YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO FIND ONE FOR WHATEVER YOUR NEEDS ARE.

Bought to keep my phone and small digital camera safe on the deck of my kayak. I had both secured under a bungie with the carabiner also secured to a bungie. It slipped out and one end hit the water but the carabiner held it on. the bottom was in the water less than 5 seconds and $500 worth of phone and camera were destroyed by the uninhibited flow of water that rushed into the "sealed" case. Bummer

Comments about Pelican 1020 Case with Carabiner:

I purchased the Pelican 1020 case to protect a small external hard drive from water during emergencies such as floods and other disasters. When I received it, I noticed that the foam insert actually forms a crucial part of the seal. So if you think you can remove the foam, think again - it's required, it forms the O-ring seal. I confirmed this just now when I called Pelican to confirm it. One other thing Pelican said, which surprised me: These cases are NOT supposed to be immersion proof. They are designed to float, and are water resistant. But they are not designed to be held underwater. This startled me, because I bought this thing based on it being "watertight" as the specs page says. "Watertight" is not the same as "water resistant". If you are hoping to protect your valuables from any kind of dunking (including immersion) then you probably need to get something else which actually says specifically that it is made to for immersion to some depth. The lady I just spoke to asserted that all Pelican products fall under the "not immersion proof" category, so just be aware of that. And REI, maybe you should make this more clear in your product description? I imagine quite a lot of people buy these things to protect delicate gear in ALL SORTS of conditions. It's a little silly to imagine that these conditions might exclude being completely immersed for some period under water.

Comments about Pelican 1020 Case with Carabiner:

What can I say? Almost everyone needs at least one Pelican case if you spend time in the outdoors, traveling, or in any activity in or near the water. Nowadays, it is rare that someone doesn't have at least some vital or delicate electronics with them (GPS, cell phone, digital camera, iPod, emergency locator beacon, radio, Bluetooth headsets, spare batteries) or some document or personal item that they wish to keep protected and dry (passport, visa, birth certificate, photos, ID, memory cards, travelers cheques, flashdrives, etc). You can go with the Zip-loc baggie or flimsy nylon wallet and take your chances, or you can opt to invest in this virtually indestructible box which serves as your safe redoubt within your luggage. I personally have 5 of them, different sizes, to fit my various electronics and things that I need to keep dry and protected, and they have served me well through many, many miles of travel, use and abuse. They are very high quality and very well made for rugged use. I've never had one "fail" yet, and I can tell you that it is the standard issue among professionals that know what works and what doesn't. Although I am intimately familiar with the size and shape of each of my Pelican cases now, the clear Lexan lids are helpul in quickly identifying it's contents, or in actually leaving a device like a GPS or cell phone "on" and reading the display through the lid.
