Love the specialized compartments -- soft lined compartment for laptop, another smaller one for sunglasses (I use it for cell phone), especially secure ones that a bad guy would have a hard time reaching.
But the sternum strap is attached only by a weak clip. First time I tugged on it to tighten, it came off and it does not go back on. Since I only use this for commuting, it's not a big deal, but it's what prevented a 5 star rating.
I'd recommend it to a friend but with that warning.

I have a one mile walk from the train to work. With two laptops, lunch, other stuff my pack gets pretty heavy and this bag handles the weight well. It is pretty large for a laptop bag, or perhaps I should say it holds a lot.
I really like the many compartments but I wish the pouches for cell phone, etc were larger but this is a common problem.
It mostly avoids the extra laces, braces, bands, etc that a hiking bag includes but there is one extra tie down strap that I am thinking of removing.

This pack performed great for a business trip to China. I needed something comfortable to tote around my big heavy engineering-grade laptop, and other electrical supplies. Overall a pretty well designed and organized backpack, seems there is a place for everything. And also several pockets that are just kind of stupid and I'll likely never use. Oh well. Overall I am happy.

I am really picky about backpacks because I commute via bicycle when I can and also spend a good bit of time in airports. This bag has a nice main compartment with dividers for keeping papers and books neat, a well padded computer compartment, a chords / small item compartment that is big enough for chord sets for several devices and more, plus four smaller zippered compartments and some mesh pockets to boot. Even with all the space, the pack does not feel bulky unless it is filled with things (in which case any pack would be bulky). I've only used it a few months, so can't speak to durability, but so far, no problems at all with frayed seams or any of that. I've ridden in a couple drizzles and it kept everything dry. No opportunity yet to cycle in a downpour, but the zippers look to be water tight. Oh, there is also a velcro-closing flap in front on the front of the pack that does a nice job of temporarily holding gloves, rainpants, etc. I do like the bag a lot and am glad I bought it.

Purchased this backpack for daily use. After only three months, the handle began fraying where it attaches to the seams. Am returning this pack for a better quality one. Very disappointed in this product -- so glad to have REI's satisfaction guarantee so I can return it!

Was time to retire a bag that coming apart, so off shopping I went. Hit a few places, office types before cruising by old faithful, REI. Honestly didn't expect to stumble across such a perfect fit. Needed a daily laptop/office on the go bag. Also for Airport travel. This one did it all. Perfect fit for my wide screen ASUS laptop. Great organization section for my mouse, drives, charger, calculator, phone, etc etc. The winner was the easy pull out ticket/passport holder that served me well at Security checkpoints. Plus the comfort of the hidden pocket for valuables. I tend to load down pretty heavy and this takes it like a champ. Great zippers, absolutely snagfree. I even tried to snag them just for fun. Also not a fan of bold labels or colors. While traveling its best not to stick out since it might draw peddlers or worse. Simple logo and not too much flash is great too. Thoroughly impressed and wish I had gear this good while in service. Thanks for a great product.

I use this product while I travel to work. It is spacious, has the perfect inner compartments to keep personal items in order. The only con I had was the design of the side zippers, just wish they zipped upward rather than downward. This creates a potential for items to fall off easily.

Overall, one of the better commute/laptop backpacks that I have owned. Consider a messenger bag if you haven't already.
Bag has lots of pockets, secret pockets and seperate compartments for all kinds of stuff.
Cons: Wears easily, stichting stars to come apart. This my 2nd one and I'm probably going to take it back to REI.
