Comments about REI Bug Hut 1 Pro Shelter:

I took this to West Africa as a Peace Corps volunteer because in the rainy season, you NEED a mosquito net when you sleep just to keep the bugs from buzzing by your head all night while you try to sleep, let alone getting bitten and sick.

There are two problems with this bug tent which severely limit its usability. The first is the open bottom. Yes, mosquitos can and will fly up in there unless you are sleeping on a mattress of some kind which you can tuck the sides under. If you're camping a lot like I was, you don't necessarily always have a mattress, and when I did, it was often too wide for this to fit over. Virtually every morning in the rainy season, I would wake up to see mosquitos crawling around the inside of the dome.

The other problem is that the hut part only covers half of you, which means the rest is just lying against your legs as you sleep. Now in West Africa, the mosquitos are desperate little fiends and will gladly land on the net and bite you right through it. The only defense against this is to wear a sleeping bag or sheet while under the tent. This is a problem because mosquito season is a hot season, and any extra layer of material on you just makes it more sweltering. So while it was hot enough that I would gladly be sleeping in boxers, I had to wear a sheet as well if I wanted this net to keep bugs off, which as I said, it only just barely did.

Basically, if you go camping with a narrow mat in mild or cool climates, this will work fine for you, but in the places of the world with the most mosquitoes, it's all but worthless. I only gave this points for lightness, portability, and good construction, despite the poor design.

Comments about REI Bug Hut 1 Pro Shelter:

Used this product as replacement for older non-REI single person model. Was happy with the shock cord improvement over poles you have to put together and fall apart while trying to "sew" them together in hut. Good Going Techies!

Also like the roominess. As a tall guy (well, 6'2") there is ample room to like, roll over without worry of flipping over the tent part over the upper body. The rest of the hut for lower body is a non- issue and works fine. I am thinking of getting the Hut 2 for day hikes for meditation, but will need to try one out at store to see if two of us can sit comfortably for sitting meditation. Down the trail to store I go! Thanx, REI for the upgraded model improvements made. Om Shanti Om, Namaste,
        Atindra,

Comments about REI Bug Hut 1 Pro Shelter:

I hesitated to purchase this product because it had gotten a bad review (a previous model that was only [$]). However, I think REI made some improvements in design: the poles are shock-corded, and there are two small stakes to use to anchor the frame part of the bug hut to the ground so it won't flip over. I don't think the fact that the bug hut doesn't encase a sleeping bag all the way around is a big deal - I don't think mosquitoes are going to find a way to crawl on the ground and up inside. Would no-see-ums? I don't know.I used this in Shenandoah on an overnight in July and was bug free inside, it is light and easy to set up. I used it under a tarp and it was great to have such good ventilation and not worry about mosquitoes.
