The short spout on this kettle greatly reduces the amount of water that could potentially be boiled. Mine also came with the plastic handle coverings already melted, not unusable but a new product should look new. If all you need is a little bit of water boiled, this kettle could do the trick. I have found that it dose not hold even a full water bottle and is not sufficient for my needs.

This teapot is awesome! It's very light. If you are not careful, the rubber on the handle will melt. Water boils quickly and it pours easily.
I have two problems with it and they are minor. I wish it was a little bigger. A full pot was not enough to completely fill two GSI mugs(for coffee). But, water will boil so quickly in this thing, that it really was not a problem to just refill it. The othe rproblem is that the lid does not stay on. I used it to hold all of our coffee needs and I had to tape the lid to keep everything in.
do not let those two minor issues keep you from buying this. It is absolutely awesome! When we go canoeing this summer, I think we will ditch the pots and pans and just bring this!

Used this kettle on a backpack and it's fantastic. Boils water quickly and easily and made meal time a breeze. Wish they had a slightly larger size, but this is bigger than it seems. Wish I would have bought this years ago. Worth bringing along the rest of my pots and pans. So light you just don't notice when packing it.

One of my best pieces of kitchen gear. Boils fast is light weight. I know all you do is boil water with it but it rocks. Simple to use pours great and is super light. I honestly didn't think I would use it much but I have boiled hundreds of gallons in one of these.

Do you mainly just boil water, like for coffee, freezer bag cooking, freeze dried? This is a must have then, do you do the gourmet or cook in a pot, then this is a bad choice, however I do mac n cheese or ramen quite simply in the kettle, the spout makes it easy to strain noddles also. This kettle is very stable and boils water quickly, you can easily do 4 cups though the spout will spit a little while boiling. It would probably boil faster if the spout could be covered, but I haven't figured out a way I like yet. If you keep the included handle the rubber will eventually melt a bit and it makes lid removal difficult while upright. This piece is very easily modified though. The interior will hold a lot of items too. A great kettle.

I am quite obsessive about my backcountry gear. I plan extensively and purchase gear often for my trips as a vicarious activity when work keeps me off the trail.
I own or have owned just about all conceivable cooking systems. If you aren't a gram weenie or a 20 mile a day thru hiker - this kettle is the ideal choice for boiling water.
At the time I purchased this pot, I was playing with alcohol stoves, due to deciding my Jetboil PCS was too heavy. The wide flame pattern of my Trangia Westwind and then MBD Bios necessitated a wide bottom in my boiling vessel. This kettle fit the bill. The "heat exchanger" on the retired Jetboil was a big deal, it captures heat very well. The wide bottom of thick aluminum on this Kettle did suprisingly well too - several minutes faster boil time from an anemic alcohol burner.
When I went back to canister stoves (a Titanium Primus burner) after deciding alcohol stoves' negatives weren't worth the weight savings, I kept using the kettle instead of switching to a titanium mug for several reasons:
* A Snow Peak 700 (for example) is only .7 ounce lighter, is smaller in volume, heats less efficiently, doesn't pour as easily, and costs 60% more.
* Jetboil's new Titanium Sol mug can boil less than 1/2 the volume (.8 L volume but you can only fill it half way), weighs .8 ounces more, and is over 3 times the price. While it's heat exchanger may be more efficient in design, the titanium material is not as good conducting heat so I strongly suspect a wash in heat time / fuel usage. You are still limited to using Jetboil's heavy burners with this mug.
The pour spout advantage wasn't one I had initially considered, but in use it has become HUGE. Pouring boiling water into a dehydrated meal is so much easier with this kettle versus a cup/mug style container. The spout on Jetboil's lid was the best I had used prior to the kettle, but I still managed to burn myself with that - not true with this kettle.
This year I am experimenting with a Biolite stove - the GSI kettle has again been the perfect contailer to put on this stove. (In fact some of the the company's product photos included this kettle).
Notice the pattern - in my obsession I've tried a bunch of stoves since leaving the Jetboil, but the GSI kettle has remained in my cooking kit. I've found no better..

The dark anodizing and squat shape, I believe, improve the heat absorption considerably. I used an identically shaped bare aluminum kettle for many years; this uses less fuel. I got 5 full days including one snowmelt on a solo trip with 375mL white gas with a Whisperlite MSR stove. A tight-fitting windscreen is important. Bend the ends of the bale so it can't come loose -- or you may want to store the bale inside the pot. Pack it carefully, the protruding spout is vulnerable (that's what did in my old one). If the stove fit inside, it would be perfect.

Did the JMT in 13 days. Brought a MSR Pocket Rocket, One 8 ounce canister, and this kettle. Had Mountain House dinners every night and coffee in the morning.
The canister lasted the entire trip, with some fuel left over.
Boiled 32 oz of water for dinners, 16 oz of water for breakfasts.
Compared the boil time of the kettle to a 2L pot with lid and it was about 50% faster....a Must Buy if you only boil water. And it is sooo easy to pour from, did not even come close to spilling any water when pouring.

Another item I bought because of the coolness factor and then fell in love with after only a few uses. Obviously it's use is for boiling water which it does very well given the thin material used. I use it paired with the pocket rocket stove. You can fit this stove with it's case into the kettle but the canister is slightly to big to join it. You can fit the canister by itself though. I use it for making tea (it is a tea kettle after all haha) and making dehydrated meals. It is very tiny and before when I had only seen it online I assumed it was much bigger but it is a very small, cute little kettle. It feels lighter than most titanium things I have seen. Saw it at REI and bought it right there for about $25. Worth every penny and is cool looking to boot.
