Comments about Pakboats 17 Folding Canoe:

I bought this canoe so it could be transported in a camper van without the hassle of putting it on top. Assembly took a little over an hour with 2 people. Some parts were a stuggle (sliding in the gunnels, they caught every 16 inches or so and had to be unstuck by a helper. The instructions were rather poorly written and seem to apply to all of the canoe line even when the parts were different. I feel as if 2 people could assemble the boat in 40 minutes after a couple of assmblies

On the water the canoe seemed a little more sluggish than a composite boat, but I expect that its rough water performance to be better. I am impressed with the quality of the hull and its reinforcements. The thin layer of closed cell foam between the skin and frame is also a nice touch. I have owned a few folding kayaks and this is the area that takes most of the abuse. The web seats are comfortable, the bow more than the stern due to width issues. The boad does not include a yoke so that will be an extra to purchase. K aneeling requires an ensolite pad or crazy creek chair as the ribs are in the way.

My only real complaint is that one of the air chambers, out of the 6, does not hold air for more than half a day. I suspect that the valve may have a small leak, but have not had time to fully determine the cause. If I can get the chamber to hold air overnight the boat gets another star; otherwise, I'll be speaking with REI's customer service department.

Comments about Pakboats 17 Folding Canoe:

I have used my 10 year old boat on over 10 major expeditions in Alaska, Yukon, NWT and Nunavit for a total of over 8000 miles. Longest trip down the Yukon River in 2009, 2000 miles, 67 days. I mail the boat to the float plane company and mail it home from the town at the end of the trip. Easy to put together, once you do it a couple of times, usualy less than an hour. Easy to take apart, less than 20 minutes. Weighs around 50 lbs. so it is very easy to portage. The boat is durable and the skin is extremely easy to patch.

Comments about Pakboats 17 Folding Canoe:

Bought this because we didn't have enough room to have a full-size canoe in the garage. It's very convenient, but the first time you put it together it takes quite a long time. The second time you put it together takes about 20 mins. I managed to bend one of the cross-beams - you have to remember to be careful where you apply force. Fortunately [...]got me a replacement part very quickly. Because the boat is quite light, and has very large sides you can get pretty severe cross-wind loading. So it's actually better behaved with some ballast loading.

Comments about Pakboats 17 Folding Canoe:

I bought the 16 ft, thinking it would be great in remote areas. I took it to Trapper's Lake, CO to try it out. It is HEAVY. The website say it takes 30 minutes to set up. I am very handy at setting things up, having set up tents in the dark for the first time. After 2 hours of wrestling this thing around, I gave up. Then came the bigger surprise, it took 3 of us 3 hours to take it apart! Trying to slip and pull the rods out was a night mare! A waste of a great day in Colorado! Additionally, it looked too flimsy for the purpose I had in mind, back country canoeing in the southeast. This has been the biggest mistake I have ever made!

Comments about Pakboats 17 Folding Canoe:

I have packed this canoe in my car trunk or checked it as baggage on charter and commercial airlines while padding this boat down the Kazan River in Nunanvut, Hells Bay in the Everglades, between islands in the Dry Tortugas, on the Lake Superior water trail, and in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. It's been dragged loaded over beaver dams and lined up and down rocky streams with only minor scratches (repair kit included for major damage).
