A tiny thorn (smaller than a rose thorn) pierced this bottle on the second use. I would only recommend it for light indoor use e.g. at the gym.

Comments about Platypus plusBottle 1-Liter Water Bottle with Push/Pull Cap:

My Buddy and I went to the Indian Peaks Wilderness for a 4 day excursion, and we took two of these along. i had filled them with an elixir to add some fun to the trip, which they held perfectly safe. Night one a bear came to camp looking for some grub(sucka we're bear safe), but it did find our Platypus bag. When I woke up and was making coffee I looked up and about 20 feet away from camp was the bag, I was terrified, that we might have lost half our drink. These bags are made SOOOO well that the bear had left not only tooth prints on both sides of the bag, but it hadn't popped and spilled our drink...NOT A DROP! The bag at no point leaked over the next few days, which tells me it's official all my liquid storage devices are being exchanged to Platypus!

Comments about Platypus plusBottle 1-Liter Water Bottle with Push/Pull Cap:

I like this bottle because it's easy to carry, and the space it takes up depends on how much water you need. Great for stuffing in a backpack without being too bulky, has a loop for easy carrying or hanging on a carabiner, and very durable. Took it backpacking for four days, hanging on the outside of my pack, and it didn't get a single scratch from sliding down granite slabs and trekking through brush.

Only downside is the cap. I hate this cap - it's awkward to pop open and is stiffer than most pop-top bottles. Opening it with your teeth requires non-trivial force and is uncomfortable; gripping the bottle will likely spurt water everywhere when it opens, because the bottle is soft; cap unscrews easily, so it can be slightly open without my noticing it and leak water everywhere.

Wish this came with a hyperflow cap, like the Platypus SoftBottles, or had reasonably priced hyperflow caps. The cap has been such a headache for me that I recently bought a 0.5L SoftBottle, just for the cap, because they're interchangeable, and bottle+hyperflow cap was the same price as just the cap. Go figure. So my perfect bottle comes out to be a pretty expensive bottle, but it's the only bottle I've needed for a year, and (hopefully) will likely last me a few or several more.

Comments about Platypus plusBottle 1-Liter Water Bottle with Push/Pull Cap:

Great water bottle to carry with you daily, folds compact into my Camelbak MULE after use. Intentionally purchased to avoid lugging around an empty rigid plastic or steel bottle.

I replaced the sport cap with a standard cap from a small 1 oz plastic travel bottle. A taller cap, allows you to really torque it down to prevent any chance of a loosen/leak. This bottle is carried in stores from what I have seen, experiment with the caps to see which one you like.

Using this bottle does draw some odd glances at times, "Is that an IV bag?" etc. which amuses me. I really like this versatile and compact piece of kit.

I thoroughly enjoy my Platypus bottles (I have two). I use them camping, backpacking, and hiking. The capacity is good and I like the fact that the bottles become flat when empty and can be stored in a pocket or backpack without taking up hardly any space.

Comments about Platypus plusBottle 1-Liter Water Bottle with Push/Pull Cap:

This is a strong bottle which just this week survived being run over by an SUV. It was stored in the blue thermal covering you can buy seperately and the tire prints of the car still remain but the seams did not rip. The Toyota Highlanders huge tire squashed the bottle with water in it and flattened the part where the cap fits and broke the inside of the cap yet leaving the bottle unscathed. So instead of needing to buy a new bottle, I only need to replace a new cap at 1/5th the cost!

I also like the hole in the bottle that I use for clipping it to my kayak when out on the water.

When backpacking it's great to be able to compactly fold it which requires little space until needed.

Comments about Platypus plusBottle 1-Liter Water Bottle with Push/Pull Cap:

I bought one of these after a recent primitive camping trip, and I have to say, I got tired of carrying a bunch of empty nalgene bottles around throughout the weekend. The small footprint when empty is worth it for that reason alone!

I've also started using this bottle when I go to the climbing gym since I use an REI Flash 18 for my gym gear. It's not the biggest bag and this bottle fits right in with all my other stuff since it can bend and mold to the space I put it in.

Overall, I like this bottle. It can be a bit awkward to drink out of but that's a minor gripe, and I do like the sports bottle type cap, but I may get another with the solid cap. However, I've had no problems with leaking so far.

As far as cleaning goes, it's a little more difficult than a nalgene, but as others have posted, a little warm water and soap works, or warm water and a bit of bleach. Then just blow it up with air and set it out to dry. Easy!

Comments about Platypus plusBottle 1-Liter Water Bottle with Push/Pull Cap:

These things have excellent capacity for the weight. I carry two or three of them while backpacking, they fit perfectly in the side pockets of my pack, and the handles make it easy to snag one for a drink while on the move.

Unlike a bladder that's buried in your pack, you always know how much water you have left, making it easier to make smart decisions about when and where you get more water.

Never had one break in the 25 backpacking trips I've owned one. That's pretty durable.

Comments about Platypus plusBottle 1-Liter Water Bottle with Push/Pull Cap:

Over the years I have used a wide variety of water bottles for backpacking, cycling, and ordinary recreation. While the traditional Nalgene bottle definitely has it's place, the Platypus bottles are by far my favorite.

I have used both the old and new style one litre bottles, and more recently, a three litre hydration bottle (with the single, small opening, not the "zip" top version), and I have not been particularly kind to any of them. They have fallen from bike racks while mountain biking, skittered across rocks on hiking trips, been tossed carelessly out of the way when making or breaking camp, and been stuffed in my briefcase. As I reflect on my occasionally dicourteous treatment of these bottles, it is perhaps astonishing they have never sprung a leak or torn open.

I typically carry two litres of water when hiking, since Minnesota, though short on towering peaks, has an embarrassing surfeit of lakes and streams. Most of my trail water is stored in a hydration bag (the simple, Platypus 3 litre bag). When in camp, however, I rely on the one litre bottles for cooking and cleaning, which I flatten and keep stored in my pack while on trail.

I experimented with recycled water bottles on a few trips, but found they were prone to cracking, and leaking, if crushed. The ability to flatten and store the Platypus bottles, apart from their very light weight, thus makes it possible to easily adjust your water carrying capacity during the course of a long trip, and to have additional capacity at camp.

The small mouth of the one litre bottles can make them more difficult to clean, but I have found two ways of quickly, and easily, removing debris, mold or odors. First, I periodically fill the bottles to the brim with warm water and add one table spoon of bleach. After sitting for approximately half an hour, they are rinsed and will be very clean. Second, if I have used a bottle with energy drink mixes, or allowed it to sit too long before a regular cleaning, I insert a single square of paper towel into the bottle (together with a few drops of bleach), then fill it half-way with water, secure the cap, and shake vigorously for a few minutes. The mechanical action of the paper towel, together with the bleach, will scrub the inside of the bottle.

Hard plastic bottles can be indispensable, but over the years I have increasingly come to rely almost exclusively on these svelt water bags. They are not a big item, nor expensive. They are not flashy, and one would think undeserving of so many words. But when I think of the items that fill my pack, these are certainly among the most useful.
