I'm on my third replacement cartridge in three years. I get one after every season. While this system is lightweight and does the job, it only gushes out water for the first couple of liters or so. After that, it rapidly becomes difficult to pump, the water is forced out with great effort and it stays that way until you get tired of straining and shell out the bucks for another one. The first year I owned a Hyperflow I thought I was doing something wrong, so I was very, very careful with the next filter that I bought. I back flushed every time when used. I filtered only visibly clear water. The device still became difficult to pump to after a half dozen uses. With the third replacement filter I had the same results. Why do I keep buying them? I like the light weight too much I guess.

Fast and easy to use when the filter is new. If I would have read the instructions I would have known to pre-filter the water that had a lot of tannins. Since I hadn't, the first 5 liters pumped easily, the next 5 with difficulty and the last 10 of our trip with extreme effort despite several backflushes. Now I need to buy a new filter because even backflushing at home does not get it flowing well. 20 liters if well short of the 1000 listed.

Comments about MSR HyperFlow Replacement Cartridge:

The product is very light and works well when new. However I filtered quite clean snow water with the filter and expect that I filtered less than 50 gallons before the filter cartridge became very difficult to use. I think if it claimed 200 liters maximum it would be a more accurate description.

I also suspect that if I was filtering desert water that I would likely only get 10 gallons out of this filter cartride.

So I recommend this cartridge and associated filter only in areas with crystal clear water such as much of the Sierras or San Bernadino Mountains and would only expect to get ~50 gallons of filtered water. I cannot imagine the situation were I would expect 200 gallons out of this filter cartridge.

I would recommend the product with the above limitations.
