Rated 5 out of 5 by from Definitely a great investment I bought this jacket for a three week trip around New Zealand. I needed something that wouldn't be too bulky or heavy in my luggage and also be multi-purposed. Due to the variability of environment around the island and where we traveled, this jacket was great on windy beaches, cold tramps to the top of mountains, and for wet strolls through the rainforests. I loved how I could just use the jacket with just my one shirt layer and still be comfortable when it got windy. Even if temperatures got warm, it was breathable enough that I was not sweating. Plus it has great zippers around the armpit area so you can have some ventilation. When it was raining, I was still bone dry after half an hour. I was really impressed at how warm I was with just a few layers underneath when we were around the glacier areas. If you have the money to spend and you are a regularly hiking or camping in cool/cold, windy, or wet places this is a worthy purchase!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Wet thru in 20 mins Used the product around town, day hiking and backpacking. Went to the UK and hiked 15 miles of truly difficult hiking in 24 hours in the Lake District fells (awesome!!). Did not get a drop of rain there then went to Edinburgh, Scotland where it was raining a lot. The very first day it was raining pretty steady. My dad had his Arc'teryx Beta AR (from REI) and I had this Marmot. His Beta AR was perfect. Mine, sadly, was truly terrible. We were both shocked to find that after only about 20 mins I was beginning to feel water inside. It was a very cool day and we were just walking in town so no heavy exertion to create sweat. After 40 mins we stopped in a store to look at what I was feeling and sure enough, I was getting soaked. I got this jacket around Christmas 2012 and only used it around town and a few day hikes until our July 2013 trip. Was surprised to see how well my dad's Beta beaded water and mine did not at all. Anyway, took it back to REI and they readily took it back. Got the women's version of his Beta AR. Much more expensive but should be worth it. Thank God it did not rain on our Lake District backpacking or I would have been in big trouble.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Waterproof and Windproof I love this minimalist jacket! This is my newest go-to jacket for commuting via bike. It's waterproof and windproof - a perfect shell, year round. Re: sizing - I apparently have a different fit than some of these other reviews. I'm 5'8" 150lb and generally wear a medium. I sized down to a small on this jacket, still with plenty of room for a dri-fit baselayer, fleece/wool midlayer, and this over top. I don't like to have a ton of extra room, since it just flaps in the wind and increases drag. The small size is perfectly fitted with room for laying underneath. I love that the hood isn't cumbersome. I wish I had the option to remove it, but it's easy to tuck flat against my back, and doesn't move while I'm riding. The front pockets are HUGE - lots of room to stash things, but I'm on a road bike and can't use a lot of the height in the pockets while I'm bent forward. All in all, I actually returned a Novara cycling jacket in trade for this. It works well for bike commuting year round in Chicago, but also has all of the basic funtions that make it great for backpacking or even just walking the dog. I look forward to wearing it for years!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My Idea of Perfect I am 5'3", 130 lbs with a 34C chest, so pretty much right in between a small and a medium in most things. I spent about an hour at REI trying on this jacket in a sm and med, and the PreClip and the Torrentshell in sm and med....I ended up with the Minimalist in a small and am SO HAPPY with it. Things I love about this jacket: I can fit a base layer and a midlayer under this and it still fits great; it is a basic rain jacket without a lot of bells and whistles - just my style; the Bright Grass color is gorgeous; it truly is waterproof; and the back comes down far enough over the top of my pants that I can bike to work in this jacket without getting rain down my pants. Yes, it's expensive, but from what I can tell so far, it's well worth it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very nice jacket I've had mine for about 6 months and it's been out on fieldwork quite a few times now. It keeps you DRY with very little clamminess (thank you GoreTex!), and I often wear it as a windbreaker. It fits nicely over fleeces, and has enough toggle points to allow you to cinch it up when it's your only outer layer. I very much appreciate that the "velcro" on the sleeves isn't the typical velcro and doesn't stick to everything known to man. The hood also has a fair amount of chin protection, which is nice to have when the wind really gets going. Mine also stood up VERY well to the significant amount of brush it's encountered. Some bones to pick: the hood is adjustable, but isn't quite large enough to accommodate my ponytail. When the hood goes up I have to either put on a hat or re-do my hair, neither of which is a big deal but gets kind of annoying. Also I would love to have a zip-in option for fleeces, which would make the jacket more versatile.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Doesn't fit as expected After reading the reviews and viewing the pictures, I thought I was (finally) getting a lady-cut jacket that would hug my curves. Alas, this jacket makes a perfect rectangle when laid flat. Lady-cut it is not. The extra length means that it's tight around my hips, volumionus around my waist, and perfect at the chest and shoulders. The only difference between this and other rain jackets is that it is maybe a little slimer cut at the shoulder and a little longer, making the overall silhouette less bulky. I'm also disappointed at some of the features. I do a lot of bike touring and I expected the minimalist to be extra light, but it's on the heavy side, and the hood does not tuck away like most rain jackets. The good: It looks high-quality and well-made. The red color is vibrant and the heavier, matte material looks nice. The visor part of the hood is stiff, so the rain will stay out of your eyes. It's roomy enough at the top that I don't feel restricted while biking. I got this jacket on sale and it was a really good deal for gortex, so I'll hang on to it despite the disappointing fit.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great jacket for mild urban weather The Minimalist is a great jacket for those needing wet protection, when the weather is mild. Great for urban, doesn't feel restricting, and looks great with jeans and skeaks when the weather turns a bit foul. Don't expect this to be an insulated, ery warm jacket. It's not meant to be that. It's a comfortable, stylish shell that you wear over a sweater or T-shirt when you need to repel a little rain. I live in NYC, so don't spend a whole lot of time in nature (but I do spend a lot of time outdoors), so I can't comment on it's ability to assist you on hike and camping, and the like. Long story short, it's one of my favorite items of clothing. Period.
