Comments about Yaktrax Walkers - Unisex:
Just used YAKTRAX to summit Thorong Lo Pass at almost 18000' on the Annapura Circuit in Nepal. It was knarly, with minimal trail cut into the slope, which fell sharply at 60 degree and more than 600'.
YAKTRAX was invaluable; most of the group of 16 used them... they worked!!

Needed some additional traction for winter hiking in the Rockies, so I bought these, thinking they'd be good for when I'm on the trail. They are a bit tough to get on, but once I had them on my boots, they did feel ok. In fact, they were so unnoticeable that at some point (during a short 5 mile hike on fairly easy terrain) not just one, but both fell off my boots. I did not notice until later in the day, at which point they had unfortunately become part of the mountain. Well, at least I got to use them for a few miles.

I thought I had my problem solved walking on icy roads and sidewalks which are prevalent in Montana. Wrong!!! I hit a patch of hard ice and was down before I knew what was happening. Fortunately, I didn't break anything other than my pride and sense of security while walking around town. I immediately upgraded to ice grippers with crampons....oh, and I use ski poles for added balance. If you just need something to walk around in snow, these are fine and not too hard to put on. I noticed that they rusted after I hung them up for good.

After seeing these in action on someone else's feet last winter, I knew I wanted a pair. It doesn't snow much in Seattle but when it does the whole city just spazzes out; all over town you'll see people sliding down sidewalks, slipping merrily to and fro, enjoying the mini vacation. Of course, when it gets late and temperatures drop, the continual slipping starts to get a lot less merry and rather dangerous.
As soon as I saw the snow outside yesterday I walked over to REI and bought a pair. I'm SO GLAD I did! I walked up and down Denny and all around Capital Hill without having to worry about the ice/snow/slush at all. My snowpanion (tm) did not fare so well and I ended up loaning him my yaktraks before the night was through. Now he really really wishes he owned a pair!
Obviously these are for casual walking (they are called Walkers, hello)not hiking/snow climbing. I would think the "not for hiking" disclaimer would make that abundantly clear? They are not crampons. They are for making your normal shoes more stable on frozen surfaces. They do that very well. I used them for several hours and they stayed snugly on my boots; have yet to experience any of that snapping off that other reviewers mention. (Did y'all get the right size for your boots?)
Anyways, everyone get these. You look like penguins out there, slipping and sliding around.

I had a pair of these four or five years ago that lasted 3 winters of hiking on icy mountain trails. I would estimate I put approximately 125 hard miles on that pair before one of the rubber straps snapped because it had been cut by a compressed metal coil. Bought another pair last winter and, today, the third time I had worn them, again one of the coils compressed and cut the rubber strap on the bottom. Upon comparing them with an older set my wife has, I discovered that the rubber Yaxtrax is now using on this model appears to be thinner and softer than what they were using a few years back. That would explain why my first pair lasted so long and this pair didn't. I'll be returning them to REI.

I have a large dog and it is sometimes a challenge to take her out when it's snowy and icy. These make it sooooooooo much easier! Instead of shuffling along, hoping I don't fall on my butt, I can walk normally and not have to worry about it. It would also be great for elderly people and pregnant women.

I use it to walk my dog around the community whenever there is snow/ice on the ground, very good grip.

My college age son said these are popular at his college in Minnesota so I decided to try them for walking the dog here in Illinois. Walking my active schnauzer can be a harrowing experience in the winter when there is snow and ice. I find my Yaxtrax to be a big help in most conditions. I certainly feel a lot more steady. They work great for dog walking and now several of my friends have purchased them for the same purpose. They are very easy to use on my Merrell Mocs. I have worn them for a couple of months now and they show little wear.

Told everybody I knew how great these were when I first got them and they were. I was very careful not to walk on pavement or ashpalt to avoid wearing of the spring coils. Well the spring coils broke after 3 months of moderate use of 3 or 4 times a month only walking on packed snow or ice. These are not costly and do work well but even at that they are too expensive for just one winter. I have found better alternatives now and won't be buying YakTraks again.

I bought these to use around my home in North Idaho. We get a lot of snow & our wood decks get very slippery when frozen. Instead of using de-icing chemicals around here I choose to use the YakTrax walkers.
These work great on the icy decks but are sort of difficult to put on. I finally decided just to leave them on the pair of boots that I use the most.
DO NOT wear them inside your house if you have hard tile or wood floors. These are slippery & will damage the wood!
As far as wear & tear, I arranged the rubber parts to fit inside of the tread on my boots to reduce wear.
I use these mostly for when I'm walking or shoveling all our wooden decks. I've also used them for 1 mile walks along the frozen snow packed dirt road we live off of. They have worked great for me for both usages & I'm thinking of getting another pair to just to use when I go to town, on my town boots.
These YakTrax have saved my butt on numerous occasions where I would have slipped otherwise. I will not go out on our slippery decks without these so I should probably buy a spare set just in case!
