Shorter than the Average SlingYou need to be aware that these slings are consistently two inches shorter than is typical for shoulder-length, half-length and double-length sewn runners and slings (as measured by the folded loop). Metolius says that they are "aggressively priced." Well, shaving four inches off each piece of nylon should reduce their price. You get what you pay for, don't you?
I don't blame the company for their marketing strategy. I do, however, take issue with retailers that don't accurately describe products. The actual lengths of the Metolius 18mm Nylon Open Loop Slings, rated at 22kN, are: 10"/25cm, 22"/56cm), 46"/117cm.
I have a bunch of these shorter-than-average slings, and they do the job for me because I am a shorter-than-average climber. A couple of the 22" slings work well as an improvised chest harness that is comfortably wide and pliable. The 46" sling works well as a foot loop with my ascender.
One other caveat: I find it helpful to "color-code" my slings by length. If you shop on-line, you won't be able to specify the colors you want. That may be a good enough reason to visit a retail store and pick out your own slings.
