Comments about SportRack Aero XL Roof Box:
Used for holding our camping gear to free up the back seat. It worked well but it just fits the roof rack on our S40 Volvo.

Comments about SportRack Aero XL Roof Box:
First the only con, It opens from the back, but you have to load it from the side. I open a back sliding door on our minivan and stand on the sill to load it. However, I can't reach around and close it from there. To close it, I'll close the sliding door, stand on the tire and use the side rail to pull myself up to reach around and close it (see picture).
The Pros: it's waterproof and on our recent Memorial Day camping trip, it withstood a good hail storm with no problems. It's easy to install, and it's stable while driving. I load it with two REI comfort cots, a portable propane grill, a two burner Coleman stove and three standard camp chairs. It's a great value at several hundred dollars less than the other two major brands, and that more than makes up for the minor issue with accessing it.

Comments about SportRack Aero XL Roof Box:
I needed a carrier to haul extra items home to California from Utah (725 miles). I had this packed full with golf clubs, clothing, shoes, blankets and many other items. It is really quite large. My fear was that the winds (and rain) across Nevada would buffet us around. This carrier worked very well. Wind seemed to have no additional effect and everything made it safely. I picked up some bungee cords to secure things inside the carrier and they added to the securing of items inside the carrier. I would recommend these. I am very pleased. I expect many years of great service.

Comments about SportRack Aero XL Roof Box:
Does not share the quick connect rack mounting system of my other carrier from this company. It is quite a hassel to mount this carrier one bolt at a time. You end up with a sloppier fit due to the lack of u-bolt rubber gromments as well. I was surprized that the retro system was used in this product. Feel like I just bought a discontinued product.

Comments about SportRack Aero XL Roof Box:
We bought this to transport our possessions that would not fit into our Subaru Outback for our trip from Boston to Ajijic, Jalisco Mexico. So far we have used the carrier to tranport items from our home in Wellesley (which we sold) to our apartment in Waltham (renting for one month).
I did a test installation, which took about thirty minutes. The carrier is so lightweight that I can put it on and take it off of the roof rack of the Subaru Outback by myself. (I am no Arnold Schwarzenegger.)The second time I had the installation down to twenty minutes. The denistallation took around five minutes.
I cannot attest to the durability because we have not had the carrier long enough. Although by the time we reach Ajijic, I will probably be able to give a more intelligent opinion on the durability.
I would not hesitate to recommend this to anyone who is looking for more cargo space.
Service and delivery comments:
REI was great. I had the carrier shipped to the closest store (Framingham, MA). It arrived on time as promised. The person at the store even took it out of the box and just loaded the carrier into our Outback, so we didn't have to worry about disposing of the box.

Comments about SportRack Aero XL Roof Box:
I did mega amounts of shopping/research online trying to find a Thule or Yakima roof box at a good price that could fit most of our luggage (family of 5) while traveling. That put me in a 18cu/ft+ category and shelling out around $500 to $650+ for the brands mentioned above. I was unwilling to pay that much and could not understand why those suckers cost that much. With my frugal mindset, I found this at a few sites and chose REI because of the good price and free shipping to the store near my home. We took a 1300+ mile trip over Christmas 2012 from CO to TX and back through snow/precipitation. Our luggage stayed dry and the box intact while driving 60 to 85 mph in our GMC Yukon. This mounts easily to the factory mounts on our Yukon and Suburban. You will not be able to fit skis in this box and probably only the shorter snowboards. It seems to be designed for luggage made with a higher ceiling and shorter length when compared to the other brands (rear opening only with 1 lock). Anyway, no complaints yet and it did what I wanted at a great price. One note, REI has this listed in the review as "SportRack Aero XL Roof Box by Thule". I did not see any reference "by Thule" when purchasing nor can I find one now. The paperwork received with the box does not reference Thule either. It seems to be made in the USA, company is in Granby, Quebec Canada www.sportrack.com
Service and delivery comments:
Free delivery in about a week to the store which saved money. REI staff was friendly and cheerful in the Englewood store. Packaging and item received in perfect condition as expected.

Comments about SportRack Aero XL Roof Box:
Just used this to complete 1900 miles of driving to visit family for Christmas. We drove through rain for a day and white out snow conditions another. The only snow or water that got inside was when I opened the box and some blew in. I also borrowed the same model from a friend prior to purchasing and it handled our gear extremely well for a family camping trip. Easy to install by yourself.
Service and delivery comments:
Had it delivered to the store and overall was satisfied.

Buy this. Don't spend twice the price or more on a fancier model that won't hold as much. Very easy to install and holds a ton. Buy it. Seriously.

Comments about SportRack Aero XL Roof Box:
BLUF: GREAT VALUE! No reason to break the bank on a Thule or Yakima.
Installation couldn't be easier. Four U-bolts attach with two specialty nuts each, no tools required to mount the Box. (Although, when first installing, you may need tools to adjust your crossbars to fit.) Box is light, easily lifted by one man... but it's awkward/large, so a second set of hands helps to manage it. Worked perfectly on my wife's 2008 Honda Pilot. Installed Roof Box looks like it's made for the Pilot. Fit to vehicle is ideal. Totally stable at 80+ mph. Impact to fuel economy was noticeable, but not unreasonable. I got 19.7 mpg over 1200 miles without the Roof Box, installed the Roof Box, and got 17.9 mpg over the same 1200 miles... so the added drag cost ~9.1% in fuel economy.
