Comments about SOLE Dean Karnazes Signature Series Custom Footbeds - Medium Volume:

I picked running miles this spring and my planta fasciitis returned. My last episode was over 5years ago. I read up on treatment options and aggressively iced and stretched, but decided that an orthotic might help. Went to my local REI and got some great advice and info. So far the results have been remarkable. Stretching and ice were helpful, but I can definitely tell that the insoles are a key ingredient in managing the problem. Definitely the right call

I really tried to make these were, I ran just a few miles each time for a few days and even wore them all day at work to break them in. I have very flat feet and when I ran in them my feet ached. I had to return them.

Comments about SOLE Dean Karnazes Signature Series Custom Footbeds - Medium Volume:

I used to get pretty bad arch pain after backpacking all day with a 30-40 lb pack. I bought these to try to address that problem, and they work wonderfully. I got to really work them out during 4 days on the Appalachian Trail in the Smokies. Not a bit of arch pain even after 15+ mile days. They're easy to form to your feet by following the instructions (heating in an oven), though I'm not sure there's much value in that. They seemed to work the same before the custom forming. The only (minor) issue is they chafe more than the OEM insoles. I got small blisters on the inside ball of my foot which I've never gotten before. Wearing sock liners or using body glide pretty much solves the chafing problem. They seem to be pretty tough as well, though time will tell if they stand up to use on multiple treks.

Comments about SOLE Dean Karnazes Signature Series Custom Footbeds - Medium Volume:

I have used inserts in shoes starting with spenco back in 1980. For basic arch support, the spenco is hard to beat (although they don't last long).

I tried some Sof Sole, which work in some boots - mostly boots like a military design, where the heel cup is behind the back of the cuff - in my vasque and lowepro shoes, the sof sole has a slight ridge that would give me blisters after 8 miles or more (I carry duct tape to help with "hot spots").

These things - I followed the instructions to custom mold them - really easy using an oven. I like that they do not have that ridge as the Sof Sole inserts have. They seem to position the foot better than most (from the heel). Less pronation. Padding is ok - not much more than the normal inserts that come with a boot like vasque.

What I would like to see improved: the arch area is hollow, would like to see some solid arch support. I'm sure I could rig something up, but it should come that way.

As someone noticed - the rise for the arch starts a little closer to the heel than some - doing the oven method to heat them and form them helps, and over time they will mold... however - at the store, take them out of the package, hold them to the bottom of your foot, and find the best arch/heel fit... if the size is a bit large/long, you can trim them to fit the toe box on a shoe. I was between sizes, and went with the smaller one (which works fine).

overall, very pleased. They are comfy. They would be absolutely perfect if they only cost $25.

Comments about SOLE Dean Karnazes Signature Series Custom Footbeds - Medium Volume:

After having some problems with my posterior tib tendon (inside of ankle) and seeing a PT for a while, and getting semi-custom orthotics, I found these. They are amazing. I've been running 25 miles/wk in them for about 3 months and I am considering stockpiling some in case they stop making them. I am getting another pair for casual use.

It was difficult to figure out what size I should buy - the ones that were the right length for my feet didn't seem to have the arch in the right place. I bought a bigger pair and cut about 1/4" off the toe, and these are perfect. I didn't have to heat them up - they were perfect out of the box.

Comments about SOLE Dean Karnazes Signature Series Custom Footbeds - Medium Volume:

I have these in one pair of running shoes, and two pairs of the thicker insoles as well (one in another pair of running shoes, and one in my hiking boots). Since my arches are weird (one higher than the other, and both fallen), I wouldn't be able to run pain-free without them, and hiking wouldn't be nearly as fun either. The position of the arches is perfect for me; usually the insoles that fit my arches are too small for my shoes, and my feet hang over them. And they heat-mold just fine as long as they stay in the oven till the indicator turns black.

Comments about SOLE Dean Karnazes Signature Series Custom Footbeds - Medium Volume:

I exercise 5-6 times a week and run only 2 miles about 3 times a week so I didn't have any foot or knee problem. I never used custom soles before. My brother who is in the Army said he uses Sole brand soles in all of his shoes and gave me SOLE Dean Karnazes Signature Series as a gift. I put it in my Asics Gel Nimbus 12 and it hurt for the first few times. The arch support on the sole felt it was too high but it molded to my foot about 2 weeks later (I didn't heat mold it because Sole recommends just wear-in molding for maximum support). After about 2 weeks, the soles felt really great and my run seems much easier. I'll continue to use this soles.

These are the only "over the counter" inserts that have worked for me. I have tried many, including most of the popular brands, and none have helped except these. I have planter fasciitis and have had problems running and hiking for years. These inserts allow me to hike and run roads and trails pain free. A couple of negative reviews indicate that the arch is too far back, and I can understand the complaints; it's a little too far back for my preference as well. When I first get them it just seems that the arch should be farther forward. But they keep me pain free and the others don't, so I give them five stars.
