Comments about REI CoolMax Liner Socks:

I purchased these socks at my local REI store this week. I have worn them twice on local hikes. Each time they provided extra cushion and helped avoid hot spots. My hiking boots are a snug fit, but these socks are thin enough to fit inside my regular cotton socks.

I washed them once using cold water and a gentle setting. I also enclosed them in a mesh washing bag as others have suggested. I let them air dry. Nevertheless, I noticed that the top of one of the socks has started to fray as the stitching has come loose. I think they should have held up after only one wash.

Comments about REI CoolMax Liner Socks:

I bought these liners as a last minute item for a 20-mile round-trip, backpacking trip on the Pine Ridge trail to Sykes Hot Springs in Big Sur. I mention the trail because it is known as the elevator trail - lots of ups and downs. The last couple of times I did this trip I got hot spots on the top of my pinky toes even with really good hiking socks and shoes. I was nervous about not trying them before the actual trip, but I was very pleased. I avoided the hot spots both ways. My pinky toes came out unscathed. The only bad thing I'll say is - why can't liners and socks not have the seam at the toes? Even though these liners have them on the outside they are still right on top of the toes. At one point the left liner must have shifted because I could feel the seam even though I managed not to get the chafing.

Comments about REI CoolMax Liner Socks:

First off, REI fixed the toe seam problem by basically making the socks inside out. Second, they are great in hot, dry conditions but they do get a little funky smelling after a full day in them. I've used them for day hiking and backpacking in mostly warm weather. Used them for two weeks straight in the desert (in late May) with some Coolmax athletic socks. I got no blisters or hot spots at all. They held up well, but a few pairs got small runs/pulls after washing. But they didn't seem worse for wear even with the runs/pulls. They kept my feet cool and blister-free, so I consider that a job well done. I've ordered a few more pairs since they worked so well. They cleaned up well after getting covered with red clay too. I wash them in a mesh lingerie bag (since they do get pulls easily) and never put them in the dryer. They air-dry in no time.

      Cramped my toes

Comments about REI CoolMax Liner Socks:

I'm used to wearing a single layer of light hiking socks when I go backpacking. But when I got my new boots and felt I needed a little more blister protection, so I got these along with some REI wool socks. These liner socks fit like a glove and I'm pretty sure they would prevent blisters if I had used them for a long hike. Also, I did not experience any issue with the seam, as other reviewers had mentioned. The good news stops there.

The big problem I experienced with these socks is that the underside is pretty slick. Combined with a wool sock my feet end up sliding forward. Fortunately I have a boot with plenty of toe room. Unfortunately my wool socks did not. Even though I could easily wiggle my toes my feet felt squished inside the socks, and I ended up with foot cramps.

These socks would be way too thin for hiking by themselves. And I think they have durability issues. I put at most 2 miles on a pair and was already getting some loose threads. Plus I got them in white so they're not ideal for dress socks. I returned them, and I'm going to stick to single-layer light hiking socks.

Comments about REI CoolMax Liner Socks:

After an Eagle project where I walked about 8 miles and had 2 blisters on the bottom of my feet and one more on my heal, I headed into REI to get some help. These were recommended. I have used them and love them. I do end up pulling them up a lot as they like to "short sheet" me at times. But pulling them up and making sure my feet are OK is alright. I love these so much that I now own 3 pairs.

Comments about REI CoolMax Liner Socks:

I use these liners with REI expedition Merino wool socks and have never had a blister or a hot spot when using them. My feet also never seem to feel wet when used in this combo. I bought them for when I go hiking and backpacking. I wear a size 10 shoe and bought the medium socks. The large seemed a bit loose for me. I also did what another reviewer did and turn them inside out so the toe seam is on the outside.

bought several pair and have been wearing these socks for a year now, and i absolutely love them. i wear them under cotton socks when i am at work (where i wear patrol boots on hot floors, cold pavement, wet concrete, all in the same shift). wear them under heavy wool socks for cross country skiing and backpacking; under athletic socks at the gym. in all conditions, hot, cold, active, wet, whatever, they keep my feet drier and much more comfortable.....and i haven't had a trace of toe fungus since i started using them.

Comments about REI CoolMax Liner Socks:

These sock liners are a life saver. I was getting tired of hotspots causing me blisters, even on little day hikes, so I invested in a few pairs of these. One of my best hiking investments by far.

Some of the reviews comment on the seams at the toes being uncomfortable. I noticed this when I first put them on but wasn't bothered by it while hiking.

Invest in a few pairs. You won't regret it.

My two friends & I all purchased these liners for our hike to the bottom of the Grand Canyon. We wore them under our new Smart Wools (also from REI) and none of us got any blisters. They definitely wick moisture and offer a layer of protection. Inexpensive & lightweight-worth having a pair. Easy to rinse out & dry quickly.
