Comments about La Sportiva Trango S EVO GTX Mountaineering Boots - Men's:
As a mountaineering boot, it's great with snowshoes and crampons, has a sturdy platform, and the lifted heel makes inclines easy.
However, I had trouble with comfort on high-mileage trips. I bought this as a backpacking boot (which was silly) and had lots of trouble with my pinky toes and friction. Honestly, I did about 50 miles in Crocs rather than use this boot all day.
Also, the boot didn't withstand wear-and-tear very well.
At 100 miles, the sole began to separate.
At 200 miles, visible wear showed layers.
At 300 miles, the tip of the toe is pulling off.
I'll return these and get some backpacking boots.

Comments about La Sportiva Trango S EVO GTX Mountaineering Boots - Men's:
As is usual with the quality of La Sportiva products I'm quite happy with these boots. I tend to have low volume feet and the Nepal last (I also own the Nepal Top for ice climbing) has always treated me well - the Trangos use the same last.
They fit my need for a light weight mountaineering boot for summer and winter climbs in California. The boot has also has generous rand for additional friction/stickiness.
Used as a backpacking boot I wouldn't know - I tend to backpack in tennis shoes.
Service and delivery comments:
I've never been impressed with the speed at which REI ships products they are quite slow, however I do like my dividend.

Comments about La Sportiva Trango S EVO GTX Mountaineering Boots - Men's:
What I liked about these boots is that they are light weight and water resistant. The heel box keeps the heel in place well but the middle of the boot is too wide for me and my feet slide around when crossing a slope. The main problem I had was that after a year the right boot developed a whole in front of the toe box, like I was hiking on my toes. Also the rand started to crack in places. I returned the boots one year after I purchased them.

Comments about La Sportiva Trango S EVO GTX Mountaineering Boots - Men's:
I took these boots to Mt Shasta after an REI employee recommended them to me. I had them for about 3 weeks before I left and I put on about 30 miles in them. They were like wearing tennis shoes. Completely comfortbale and easy on my feet. I never had any hot spots on my feet and I thought they were amazing boots. Until...
I went to Mt Shasta where it was 85º in the city and only 60º at 10000 feet. It was about 30º at night. But after the hike form 8000 foot camp to 10000 foot camp my toes were wet and frozen. I was wearing extra thick wool socks with foot liners and I bought them a size big to accommodate for the socks. The summit climb was miserable to say the least. My toes were tingling and in pain after only an hour of climbing. Im not sure why a great company would make a non insulated summer hiking boot designed for the snow! These are terrible alpine boots and should be avoided at all costs when you are in the snow. My flip flops might have done a better job keeping my toes warm. They are being returned today!

Comments about La Sportiva Trango S EVO GTX Mountaineering Boots - Men's:
Wore this boot hiking in Angel Rocks Alaska to break them in. We hiked in 3 feet of snow. They fit a few sizes small, I am 8.5 in regular boots, in mountaineering boots I normally wear a 9.5. These I went with a 10. No hot spots, no uncomfortable rubbing areas, and my toes were warm. Had fairly good traction, footing felt solid.

Comments about La Sportiva Trango S EVO GTX Mountaineering Boots - Men's:
One of few technical pieces that I have never regretted getting. Waterproof until old age, super hike-able with a pack and stiff enough for all but the most vertical of ice. Works well with crampons. Traction on all sorts of rock with climbing rubber on the toe allowing for excellent wedging and smearing in class 5. Lightweight compared to other boots. The thought of one pair of footware being so uncompromisingly good for so many different regimes at the same time boggles the mind. Will continue purchasing until product is discontinued.

Pretty lightweight and versitle - saw a review on another site that the Mountain Rescue EMTs out west, if I remember correctly at Mt. Hood, exclusively used these. I gotta say we both liked'em much.

Comments about La Sportiva Trango S EVO GTX Mountaineering Boots - Men's:
Mountaineering boots are expensive. And that is why I got these, probably for the same reason as most other people; they are cheaper than most. And therefore not as good. They do the basics of any boot, and are very good at doing what they need to do. Most important is flex, they don't flex too much in the soul, but just enough to not feel like you are walking on a wood soul. These are not at all meant for hiking, but it would be nice to have a boot with a little more flexible of a soul, seeing as how most climbs require a good approach. That is the only reason for the 4 stars instead of 5. Overall, they are a good boot and I would recommend for anyone getting into mountain climbing.
I would also recommend renting boots first from REI, or at least being by an expert before you step into a spendy pair of boots.

Straight out of the box and right up the Mt Baldy bowl to the summit, flawless. Got a liiiiiittle cold but I was postholing some and in deep snow a lot of the day. Many comments and others said how much they loved theirs or their friends loved theirs. Great boot, highly recommended!!

Comments about La Sportiva Trango S EVO GTX Mountaineering Boots - Men's:
Light and comfortable, good insulation, easy fit with crampons. Not strong boots, protecting rubber is detaching from the body after 4 high mountain climbs (10 hours hike up to 5,000 meters or 16,000 ft) and 5 regular 4 hour hikes. I like them, but my 30 year old Dolomites look stronger except from the sole.
