by fromGreat canoe, but watch for rocks. I went to Maine on a trip with Boy Scouts as a leader. We were given a Penobscot, while the boys had Old Town Discoverys. The Penobscot was wonderful on the lakes! The bow entry and long keel meant it was fast and straight. However when we started on the East Branch of the Penobscot River, we realized how unforgiving a sharp bow entry is in rapids. If the boys failed to steer clear of a rock, their canoes (with larger curves in front) would rise up and softly get stuck for a bit. Our strokes were better, but not perfect. If we failed to steer clear of a rock, we would hit hard! Our Penobscot would stop dead instantly, but everything and everyone inside would continue forward. We capsized from this three times one day and had sizable bruises to take with us. Thankfully, the canoe's material was strong and withstood our mistakes. Yet, it had some big dents to take back to base too.

by fromGreat all-around canoe choice Canoes are like hammers or saws: ideally, you should have different kinds for different jobs. I do have solo whitewater, tripping and freestyle canoes, but needed a tandem that could do flatwater or moderate whitewater well. My Penobscot 16, with an extra center seat for soloing does it all! Tracks well on quiet water, even in wind, yet is maneuverable and dry on rivers up to Class II. The Royalex stands up to rocks, but is not TOO heavy a layup. Very nice for 2, but also for one with the center seat, paddling on one side. (I never recommend paddling solo from one end, due to weathervaning problems in headwinds.) Carries a decent amount of gear, though for tripping, the Penobscot 17 can carry more. Good boat!

by fromRoyalex River Runner I bought this canoe primarily for river fishing and camping with my son. I've used it in both solo and tandem mode. As described, it is an intermediate canoe, because it is not as wide and stable as a beginner canoe. I'm very pleased with the performance.

by fromAwesome canoe I hated rental canoes and gave up on canoes, got this Old Town as a gift and it changed my perspective on canoes, this is fast, stable and comfortable. The canoe instills confidence. My wife and I are planning our vacation around this canoe. Other canoes where so tippy, this one is extrememly stable. Can't wait for our 5 day canoe trip!!!

by fromGreat Canoe!! Great Canoe for Multi Day Trips. Lightweight and Rugged. It scratches easily but that just shows that it gets used and it will take abuse for many years!

by fromA Great Multi-Tasker! I've used the Penobscot on large wide rivers, small rivers with plenty of turns and obstacles, and lakes in just about every imaginable weather conditions. It tracks well on flat water, yet is quite maneuverable in rapids. While it's best for I and II rapids, it can handle III with the right paddlers. Similarly, it's an awesome day tripper, but if you pack carefully, can be a good multi-day canoe. This boat is no speed demon, but it's stability and responsiveness makes up for what you lose in speed.

by fromLusted after this canoe of 15 years I canoe the surf and lakes. I used to do whitewater. I've done class IV in a discovery and have pictures to prove it. A couple of friends have Penabscots and I've been using shear grit to keep up with them for many years. This light weight perfectly designed canoe is heaven. Price was not a consideration in this choice. This is just the best canoe available.
