Comments about SRAM PG-970 9-Speed Cassette:
I've had one of these on my 05 novara ponderosa ht commuter/tourer setup for two years and roughly 6500km. It could still be in decent shape, but my chain is just about fried and may have formed the cassette teeth too much to have it work with a new chain. In terms of drivetrain maintenance, I usually did moderate cleaning/lubing about every 200km and a thorough cleaning about every 500km.
My primary use was commuting/errands/all around transport on city streets with a decent amount of loaded couple day tours here and there. Mixed amount of hills/flats, rain or shine, location sf bay area california.
It shifted smoothly and I've had no problems with it. My previous cassettes I think were shimano deore or lx. The sram has lasted at least as long as my first cassette and 1000km+ longer than my second one. It's lighter than the deore for just a little more $. I know you can get a lot more milage out of a drivetrain than this for more $$ (my friend has put 15-30,000km on his drivetrains doing touring/transport with minimal cleaning), but it has served me well for this price.
