Me and my wife are avid shoppers at REI as well as cyclists and have no problems recommending there products to any of our friends, however this tube is best left on the shelf not even a good back up to get you home. Went through 5 tubes in the last week and a half. Used on Normal roads, and no rims are not bad checked that out to. So my suggestion is to stay away from these, unless you need to strap your bike down on the back of a car with it because it does make a great Bungee or could possibly cut in strips and make a great sling shot,.

First tube I've encountered that I could not inflate. My pump heads (Silca, Topeak JoeBlow) blew off at about 40 ps1.

I cannot understand why REI continues to sell this junk. I buy tires at the REI store, then go elsewhere to buy tubes. These tubes are so bad that they are not worth the time and effort of mounting them. I wouldn't use them if they were free. I wouldn't use them if you paid me.

These tubes doesn't have a threaded stem wall, so it is impossible to lock them on wheels using the lock nut provided on some other brand tubes.
Get Kenda tube instead, they are cheaper and have threaded stem wall.

[...] A week later, the rear tube was flat due to a hole near the valve stem next to the stem reinforcement. This is on the side of the tube opposite the tire tread. There are no problems with the rim or rim strip. This tube has the Kenda brand on it. Also, the same REI/Kenda tube I have on a different bike, but in the next larger size, leaked twice on a seam. I've replaced these tubes with Michelin Airstop tubes which have served me well. The Michelin's stem reinforcement is approximately twice the size of the REI tube's.

These tubes last 15 - 50 miles on decent roads, even with kevlar liners. I've experienced failures near the valve stems, as has been mentioned by other reviewers, and elsewhere. Even small bumps in the pavement are a significant challenge for these worthless tubes.

Right out of the box my tube was leaking air where the valve connects to the tube. REI needs to rethink the company from where they source these defective tubes. I only wish that I had read the reviews first. On a positive note, I did get my money back.

Have had many Novarra tubes in different sizes. Most would split at the stem base. The latest one split at a seam after about 10 PSI. Took tube back and told the clerk about the problems I had experienced. She tried to school me on tube installation and inflation saying she worked in the service department. Funny thing is I don't ever have this problem with other brand superlight tubes. I also have perfectly well maintained Easton EA90 SLX wheels, so It's not that. These tubes are bad, and I wish REI would change suppliers! Read the reviews and improve your product!

When I first got smooth valved, nut-free tubes they were misbehaving even more than my threaded valve tubes -- lots of holes around the valve stem. I finally realized that I was using a pump that needed the pump head to be pushed onto the valve and then pulled off. But this requires extreme levelness in the push and pull in order to avoid torquing stress on the valve. I then got a pump that threads on. What a difference! I used to lose at least 10-15psi of air every time I would refill the next day. Now, I can go many days between refills, and the loss of air is minute!
And these smooth valved tubes last indefinitely.
