Comments about Yakima Side Winder Tandem Mount:

I've used this product to carry our Cannondale road tandem on our Subaru Forester since 2004. I always take the bike on/off the rack myself, without a stool or ladder. I'm 6' slender build. The key is to use the handlebar strap which keeps the front wheel straight, then it is a one-person job.

I can imagine that if you have a tall vehicle, that using this or any roof rack is more of a challenge. Roof racks in general work better on shorter vehicles, then there's no need for ladders, etc.

I really like the added safety of the locking fork mount. This is a well designed, well engineered product that allows you to safely take your tandem on road trips that are too far to pedal.

Comments about Yakima Side Winder Tandem Mount:

Great tandem carrier. We have four bike carriers including the DraftMaster (for our tandem recumbent)and have been riding for 45 years. Got the SideWinder so we could use our Honda CRV to drive long distances for rallies instead of using my F-350 diesel truck. Helps to have a small step stool for the back wheel. I fabricated a security lock/cable system to the locking cross bars to make sure no one walks off with the carrier. It also helps if you "off-set" the carrier further "out" on the bars so to avoid hitting your paint with the front chain wheel.

Comments about Yakima Side Winder Tandem Mount:

First---be ready to spend some time to load your tandem on this rack. Haste may damage the vehicle, bike, and potential loss of a tandem partner. This is a two person activity, since it requires someone to pivot the fork in place while someone else lifts the bike on to the rear support. I have found that a small ladder helps in getting the bike on the rear support. Once mounted, no worrying about you bike coming off unless you decide to go through a parking garage.
